Have to agree, I haven’t given up on 2SM and Chris Smith on breakfast would be a coup. Just not sure if MML paid out his contract maybe that would keep him off air for a while.
On the occasions I’ve listened in recently and a caller has asked how Grant is, Dave has gone a bit quiet and eventually has come up with something along the lines of “it’s tough for him but he’s ok”. That’s a real change from a few months ago when Dave’s response was much more upbeat, something like “Grant is doing fine, he’s a battler and will bounce back before you know it”. I suspect the long term prognosis for a return to the show for Grant is not good sadly. At some point soon 2SM will probably have to take a difficult decision. I doubt they’ll let it drift into 2020.
Sad news, hear that Malcolm T Elliott has passed away. I can’t really recall Malcolm as a DJ on 2SM, certainly 2UW however he did work in the 2SM newsroom. I remember him telling me that he covered the visit of the Pope in Sydney. We all remember 2SM owned my the Catholic Church back then was big on anything Catholic.
Remember Malcolm T. well when he was on 2UW in the early 70’s. Was one of the first with a breakfast show team with Peter Shanahan and Tony Dickinson. Was difficult to get off to work listening to his mayhem every morning! Didn’t hear much of him after 1980 as I moved to Melbourne.
Surprised…
Grant Goldman has posted a recent update to his facebook page.
He’s a Great Fighter.
Or should I say a ‘Crate Fighter’.
Take a look at his latest video on his Facebook Page & you’ll see what
I’m on about
Nice to see he’s still in good spirits re his health battle.
Question: If you were given the keys to 2SM Sydney, and it was detached from the Super Radio Network, what format would you do?
Which announcers would you keep on?
Would you rebrand?
Me, I would go with a talk alternative to 2GB. I’d bring back the slogan, “There’s only 1SM”, with the following line up:
5-9am: Jason Morrison
9am-12pm: John Laws
12-3pm: Chris Smith
3-7pm: John Stanley
7-8pm: Sportsday NSW
8-midnight: Clive Robertson
Midnight to dawn & majority of weekends: Automated music (Classic Hits more upbeat than 2CH).
I’d also still keep current arrangements with Crocmedia (ie keep NRL/AFL/A League Nation), but lose the annoying Off the Bench shows, etc.
Bring back the Rock of the 80s and by that I mean the 80s music that 2SM did play and that has now gone missing in action:
Too Shy by Kajagoogoo
The War Song by Culture Club
How 'Bout Us by Champagne
The Stroke by Billy Squire
Pass the Dutchie by Musical Youth
Right on track by The Breakfast Club (there is nothing more 80s than this video - it made no sense, was full of colour, fun to dance to and is right out there - I always wanted to be one of the chickens).
There was so much 80s music that just disappeared. And other 80s music that gets overplayed by the likes of smooth, WS and 2DayFM in Sydney.
It’s almost like in 1988 when 2SM stopped rocking they took 90% of the 80s music with them and it was to never be heard of again. We want it back.
We should never have let the 80s end.
The 80s should have lasted for more than a decade.
If 2SM went “Rock of the 80s” again, they could easily steal listeners from WSFM, 2Day, Triple M and Smooth. And being another music station on AM, they’d even take some from 2CH.
Sadly, that option would be too obvious for Bill. He’d prefer to let it rot the way it is.
I totally agree. And a Rock of the 80s format would, with the right music and DAB stereo, be rating higher in Sydney and at cost less to broadcast than the current offering on 1270.
Dead last. I remember Ray Hadley talking about it saying they can work it out now as all other metro stations participate (this was shortly after Sky Sports Radio re-entered the ratings). They don’t rate at all apparently.
