Well today’s ratings are once again not a great commercial result given the cost base 2CH has.
240,000 listeners in total only beating the two Sports stations. The overwhelming majority are 55+……a very hard to sell demographic.
Share of listening…pretty steady on 3.4% but again only ahead of the Sports stations.
Good luck to them though…and by the way, Tim’s sounding great on mornings. A positive era progression from Bob Rogers.
As I’ve no doubt said before, 2CH would greatly benefit from some more external advertising which specifically appeals to those who miss the 60s/70s Classic Hits that WSFM and Smooth 95.3 are abandoning.
Ratings wise, at least Chris Kearns’ “Sydney Tonight Live” program seems to be improving.
Agree. Nobody knows 2CH is Classic Hits unless they are active listeners.
People still assume CH is the daggy oldies Bob Rogers station.
So much effort with such little support.
To be fair, that’s actually true if you’re listening to 2CH on a Saturday night!
Seems that Bill Caralis should’ve bought 2CH Back In 2016 when he had the Chance And Relay some of his 2SM Programming There.
what’s the point in doing that?
I think it’s illegal to run the same content on 2 commercial stations in the same metro market anyway, isn’t it?
SEN does it a lot of time between 1116 and 1377 in Melbourne, but years ago 3MP was barred from doing simulcast across both 1377 and 693, and at that point they created Magic 693 as a secondary format.
I don’t see any benefit in the suggestion of Bill Caralis spending money to buy 2CH just to run 2SM programming on it?!
I personally think the current “Classic Hits” format of 2CH is the right one for the station and for the sake of stability (something which the station hasn’t had a lot of in recent years), it’s probably for the best that they stick with it for the time being.
What does need to change is their lack of external promotion/advertising. Unless you’re a regular 2CH listener, you’d barely know that the station still exists because there’s been very little external advertising for years. Which is sad, because I do think there are likely to be plenty of Sydney radio listeners aged 40-55 (who probably grew up with the current Classic Hits of 2CH being current hits on stations like 2SM and 2UW back in the day) who’d really enjoy the 60s/70s songs that 2CH play but WSFM & Smooth are increasingly moving away from.
I agree. And they probably don’t want to set the world on fire with ratings, so long as they’re nailing their target audience.
Well, they still need more listeners, more advertising support etc to get into profit notwithstanding they will eventually have to vacate the Macquarie studios in Pyrmont. They can’t expect the Queensland stations to carry them forever. What does intrigue me is that we constantly bring up on this forum that Bob’s show on a Saturday night has to go along with their religious content on Sunday mornings and evenings. What surprises me is that 2CH actually rates better on weekends than they do during the week.
Whilst I agree that Bob’s show is boring, is it the only heritage brand associated with the station?
Would it be like 2Day rebranding to Hit?
Maybe Bob is the biggest brand associated with 2CH and they cannot afford to lose him?
Still, even just a lunch hour special 12-1pm weekdays with Bob would be enough.
Perhaps their bean counters have assessed that it’s cheaper to lease existing facilities at Saunders St than costs of moving and fitout elsewhere.
There’s quotes from Glenn widely reported at the time of acquisition that moving to a standalone location was a top priority. Interesting how priorities change when the adrenaline of an acquisition wears off.
It’s unlikely the ACMA would have limited ongoing supply clauses so there’s a likelihood that MRN have EON over a barrel on their lease and access cost of shared facilities at Saunders Street.
With 2GB and MSR 954, both those stations could be moving to North Sydney within a few years anyway (depending on where Nine sees the radio stations as part of their future, of course)?
I thought the original plan was to relocate within 6 months or maybe it was 12 months perhaps to premises in the Northern Beaches where Cherie and the Sales Staff (if any that is) are located. Regardless I can’t see 2CH ever exceeding the magic 5% in ratings. As a loyal listener (with the exception of breakfast, late afternoons and parts of Saturday and Sunday) maybe I will be proven wrong.
I agree if 2CH can score 5% they’ll be doing well in a market like Sydney.
I often look at radio ratings from the US and in similar sized markets there a lot of stations survive on less than that. Even FM stations getting around 2 or 3%.
Interesting to see Matt Pardy does 3-5am weekdays on 2CH.
Not sure if it still happens, but does Trevor Sinclair still do 5-6am solo with Indira coming in at 6am?
I have wondered just who Matt Pardy is and still waiting for Gareth McCray to make a re-appearance, Rob Duckworth in for Ian Rogerson this afternoon
