2024 United States Presidential Election Coverage

US ratings down over 25% from 2020

Fox News led primetime with about 9.8 million viewers watching coverage anchored by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. ABC (5.67 million) led the broadcast race and edged out MSNBC (5.5 million) for second place overall. NBC averaged 5.32 million viewers, followed by CNN (4.71 million), CBS (3.49 million) and the Fox broadcast network (2.14 million). Those numbers don’t include out of home viewing and thus will rise some in the final nationals, but they’re unlikely to match the ratings from 2020.

In fact, there’s a good chance Tuesday will go down as the least watched election night since at least 2004

to be honest, i watched little of our Aussie networks during the election, as I prefer to go straight to the source, with the US networks, as they would know the story best.

I did have it on BBC for a little bit, admittedly, but was with NBC for most of the coverage.

I found the ABC yesterday was well ahead of Seven a Nine. And in some cases ahead of the US networks who were being overly cautious in calling anything.

ABC wasn’t calling any of the results. They were relying on AP for that. AP might have differed on some calls from CNN.

ABC also had better graphics IMO than some of the US Networks - sometimes less clutter is more.

Look like 7 and 10 crashed ratings wise in the Election coverage yesterday! ABC well ahead, and 9 quite strong.

Very confusing set of codings for the various segments. Some networks broke up their coverage more than others.

Not surprised - both ABC and Nine had a head start on Seven and 10’s coverage and for many, the ABC is the go to place for elections, so it’s no surprise most people tuned into them.

A preliminary comparison to 2020 it looks like most ABC daytime and prime time numbers are lower this year. The commercials seem to have done better.

10 did extremely well in Perth in the demos, winning the under 50s

Find it interesting that MSNBC ranked third overall in viewership in the US, ahead of nearly all the other major networks, and even ahead of its mothership. Forgive me if this is better served in another thread, but why do so many Americans tune into ABC News (US) on the regular? I don’t find anything about their news broadcasts remarkable, do they just benefit from being #1 in the ratings?

Over here in Oz, ABC getting the ratings results it deserves for its excellent coverage yesterday, which I actually preferred over the US networks for most of the day (I alternated between them, CNN and MSNBC for what it’s worth), so perhaps Kim Williams is already having an effect at Ultimo.

I believe CBS is still #1 in most watched network.
I’m not sure who is #1 in demos. Maybe it’s NBC

But ABC has the strongest local news ans news brands in the US

GMA is very strong ABC world news is very strong and ABC local news at 6 and 11pm tends to be dominated by ABC local stations in key markets nyc la and Chicago (ABC7)

Ratings wise here in Australia. Not surprising that ABC/ ABC News won the race. For the day and night.

Seven did okay. Hard to compare with Nine, since Nine had various entries compared to Seven’s one entry.

SBS beat 10’s coverage.

Sky News claimed it called the results first, in the press release.

Sky News chief election analyst Tom Connell accurately called the result live on air 15 minutes before any major US or Australian network.
