For both the Australian Open and the Winter Olympics, the content available for free and ‘premium’ users was identical with the only ‘premium’ benefits being HD streams and no pre-roll ads.
It does seem like though there’s going to be a bigger contrast between the two tiers for the Commonwealth Games offering.
Is this the first time 7flix is being used to carry live sports (albeit due to 7TWO’s horse racing commitments)? Although 7flix’s poor picture quality could deter some viewers.
I don’t know how we’re to decide in advance whether the premium version is worthwhile without more detail. I may have to just wait and see what the free one has on day 1.
Someone in another forum posted this comparison between the free and premium apps. I don’t know what page on Seven’'s site links to it, though. There may be more useful information wherever that is.
I don’t think that’s quite the case. The local drive show this week has been mostly a games lead-up style program with athlete interviews, previous medal winners and Quentin Hull from Grandstand co-hosting.
And from what on-air promos have said, starting next week all the local shows will broadcast live from Broadbeach for the duration of the games.
Speaking of ABC, its radio commentary team for the Commonwealth Games must be the least experienced in many years. Since the Glasgow games in 2014, Drew Morphett (RIP) and Dan Lonergan were made redundant, Peter Walsh just left the broadcaster in February 2018 to join the SANFL Digital Pass broadcast team, while David Morrow and Gerard Whateley are now working on commercial stations. Which leaves us with the likes of Quentin Hull, Clint Wheeldon, Alister Nicholson, Tim Gavel, Karen Tighe and Shannon Byrne. ABC’s resources will be stretched to the limit given its commitments to the AFL, NRL and A-League. I fear it may not be able to cover all the sports on the Gold Coast and may even have to rely on the BBC and Radio Sport NZ for additional commentary.
I don’t think extreme heat is overly common on the Gold Coast in April, but I’d imagine that Seven decided to create a livestream placeholder graphic for extreme heat just incase they need it.
In Queensland’s ‘Countdown To The Commonwealth Games’ there is a special banner similar to that used in the national news bulletins with info on where the Queen’s Baton Relay will be heading and when, and other such information in a sort of turquoise colour. I think it’s a neat touch, considering Queensland don’t normally produce banners in their afternoon news bulletins.
