WIN News

Maybe. Maybe not. We don’t know. The nine schedule is a local composite bulletin at 6. That’s the schedule.

Nine sold many broadcasting assets. They are streamlining the business. The way NBC has and the way Netflix didn’t want CNN or TNT or cable networks etc. it doesn’t mean there is no money in it, it just means they want to invest the money elsewhere.

if you sell your stock portfolio to invest in real estate it does not mean there’s no money in stocks, it means you beleive you’re money is better invested in bricks and mortar, and to be honest - nine’s money is better invested in 9Now and stan than tv stations.

Though this isn’t the first time Nine has tried to sell NBN. A proposed sale to Southern Cross when they were the affiliate fell through then, so about 6 years ago now I think. Not sure why.

Lines up with what I am hearing, plus lots of internal efficiencies within the teams, definitely a major refresh.

They would be new to Darwin lol.

In WIN markets, its not s composite 6pm bulletin aa local news is a 5:30pm - no deviation from that in all areas receiving local news.

That’s because the sub par WIN News was rating abysmally at 6pm and hurting national ratings and revenue for Nine. So it was shafted out of prime time.

Smart programming decision.

When was it rating abysmally? Under the 10 affiliation period, perhaps. It has been a long time since WIN News was at 6pm prior to the 10 affiliation agreement, so that argument is invalid.

When was WIN News last at 6pm under a Nine affiliation? Wasn’t it around 2008 or 2009 that it moved to 6:30pm from 6pm? It moved to 7pm in 2014 up against The Project and Home And Away

Every time Win News figures have been reported they are anaemic. circa 5000-6000 per sub market.

Win News was pushed out of prime time because it performed so badly in the most critical period on TV - 6-730pm. That affects Nine’s bottom line as they get half the ad revenue.

If win news was performing in prime time it would not have got bumped around the schedule so many times and ultimately out of prime time.

News that performs stays in its place: Gold Coast News at 530, NBN News at 6, 7 Tasmania News at 6, prime/7 local news at 6 qld and nsw. Those bewscaats have not moved in 2 decades.

It’s in Nine’s interest to have the highest revenue possible between 6 and 7pm.

Can I ask you - without resorting to the “win wants to save money argument” or “nine wants its metro news at 6” - leave that for a moment. Knowing NBN Local News has been at 6 for 5 decades + and gets between 200% and 300% more viewers than 9 news in Adelaide and Perth. If Win were to replace it with Sydney news about toll roads and bankstown stabbing - where do you see the ratings going from the current 150,000 viewers now at 6 within the first six months?

Some viewing figures from random week 34 in 2024

NBN Local News at 6 a 153,000 (NNSW)

9 Melbourne News at 6 - 78,000 (Vic)

9 Brisbane News at 6 - 70,000 (Qld)

9 Sydney News at 7 - 70,000 (SNSW)

regional market where local news at 6 runs V piped in metro news gets up to 220% more viewers.

Revenue estimates

We know CPM in Australia is around $10 average. That is it costs $10 to reach every 1000 viewers. Metro CPM is around 1.3x regional - so let’s say regional is $10 CPM and metro $13

NBN News gets 153,000 - so to place an it costs an advertiser $1500 per 30 seconds.

9 News Adelaide and Perth get around 50,000 viewers but CPM is higher and more premium at $13 so it costs $585 per 30 second commercial.

you pay for how many 1000 viewers you reach. That’s why ratings exist - to calculate viewers so stations can set rates.

So even though ads in Perth and Adelaide sell for 30% more (premium capital city markets) the viewership is 45,000 V 153,000 or one third. So even at the premium it costs $585 to buy an ad V the $1500 on NBN

If all 3 stations sell 18 minutes of advertising per night here is the revenue each delivers

Perth, Adelaide $21,000 per night

NBN - $54,000 per night

You can see the cash cow NBN News is. Which is why Nine kept it. Even accounting for the possibility that running the NBN news operation is more expensive than the Adelaide and Perth one - it’s possible that NBN news is more profitable than the two city markets.

WIN may mess with this. I’m not entirely confident they won’t. I am confident they’ll be damaging their golden goose if they do. And I’m confident nine would prefer them to keep the status quo

@KICK-IT even without the above arguments above, your own arguments provide just cause for local news to screen at 5:30 and National Nine News at 6pm - the quality of production delivered by WIN is not of the same standard as NBN or Nine.

Given there is a probability that northern NSW news bulletins will move to Wollongong, how many will be retained by WIN? I daresay Natasha Beyersdorf won’t be askes to come down to Wollongong. No local faces in hosting roles potentially means loss of revenue.

I am not confident in the delivery by WIN. In Newcastle, like Wollongong and Canberra they might get away with a lower production quality as there os no competition, in other regions, it probably won’t matter as the viewer numbers are significantly lower

I think this topic of discussion has run its course for now. Seems to be going in circles. Let’s pick it up again when there is something to comment rather than endless speculation and guesswork.

WIN Canberra had some technical issues transitioning out of Tipping Point into WIN News. Did anyone else in WIN territory notice (including Wollongong)?

No issues in Wollongong.

WIN News Canberra has no watermark currently, I’ll provide a screenshot soon

Currently in regional WA tonight, surprised to see a WIN News update, didn’t think they had to produce them here since it’s not an aggregated licence area and WIN doesn’t reach 75% of the population.

Didn’t catch who the presenter was though (pic below).

Yeah, it’s optional to make them. WIN did bring back a few bulletins they didn’t need to make - like the Mildura and Griffith ones, even with no actual local reporting is added.

I wonder if that’s out of WIN Hobart, someone mentioned the South Australia updates are done there.

So updates are done from Hobart but Tas news is done from Wollongong?
