WIN News

Cue the overly used image I have to use that sums this up (must admit I love using it to be honest! :yum:)

Changes at WIN News Tasmania from this Monday evening. Melbourne’s Ten Eyewitness News will air at 5pm followed by a half hour local WIN News bulletin fronted by Lucy Breaden from Hobart. It also says it will be a ‘new-look’ bulletin.
I’m certainly not the least bit surprised. They had to a act (although they pulled the trigger rather quickly didn’t they?). They were seriously getting hammered by the other news bulletins on offer. That and generally they couldn’t fill the hour with such limited resources to run with. Which has been evident since the affiliation swap.

It really is indeed baffling why they dumped Ten’s Melbourne News and brought forward their own to begin with. Another moronic decision they’ve had to backtrack on rather quickly.

I think WIN News Tasmania moved to new facilities only a couple of years ago?

Although in any case, I certainly wouldn’t put it past WIN to eventually move production/presentation of the Tasmanian bulletin to Wollongong to save costs!
Yes, moved into the ABC building in 2014.

Hmm… not sure. I’d be tipping they’d axe the lot before they moved it to Wollongong. What a schmozzle that would be.

Surely they’d be considering an Eyewitness News flavor by now?? It still baffles me as to how they still use the CHL music - it makes zero sense this far in.
I certainly wouldn’t read too much into the supposed “new look” bit there. No doubt very little changes will happen on-air. I’m certainly not expecting much to change anyways. But as I said when they moved it originally, they should’ve gone with a relaunch or something. Too Nine-esque for my liking along with the use of CHL still. Hope they are considering reworking it all this time though.

Not even Einstein can figure out the WIN logic.

I still think WIN needs to move to LIVE composite bulletins at 6.

In almost every market WIN is getting killed at 6 by slick composite bulletins from 7 and 9 with state, national and international news (albeit no local news for their areas)

WIN needs to do a live statewide newscast for each QLD, SNSW, VIC and TAS from 6-7

In that they have state, national and international news. And a local window for each region that lasts about 5 minutes.

It allows the bulletins to be live, faster paced and composite - which is clearly what viewers prefer.

Didn’t see the beginning but there was no mention at the end of of the Tasmanian WIN News about the new arrangements on Monday. The supers however did have the “First At 5:30” bit removed tonight and there was a promo later on “WIN News Tasmania, Weeknights 6pm, Weekends 5:30” but no indication that there had been a change really, so if people don’t notice the different time they’ll have no idea.
No mention whatsoever on the bulletin (though they may make mention on the Sunday bulletin). No mention on their social media either. The inconsistency of 6pm weeknights and 5.30pm weekends isn’t going to help matters. People aren’t going to follow your bulletin around the schedule idiots. WIN = hopeless.

And to finish off, Lucy won’t be presenting this weekend for unknown reasons.

Here’s some caps of the longer promo with Ten News, WIN News and The Project.

Probably not very long. It’s not looking very good. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the weekend bulletins cut completely and for weeknights to move back to 6pm with Melbourne News back at 5pm soon.

Apologies for the double post.

Not that you had to be Einstein or anything, but seems a post of mine in the WIN Television thread made 6 days ago was half right. I’m sure it will be 100% right soon.

Corinne May’s final bulletin before going on maternity leave was on the 16th September. She gave birth to her baby daughter on the 18th.

Something rare for WIN, Canberra journalist Harry Frost is off overseas to cover the first international flight with Singapore Airlines into the Capital.

Probably paid for by Singapore. I can’t see WIN putting up the $$$…

Probably means that they will use the WIN news graphics and stay Tasmania centric with their own bulletin.
Was a report in today’s paper about the changes in store for tomorrow.

The “new look” is that’s going to be reverting to a state-based format again (much like it was with the split 6pm Local/6.30pm National/International news bulletin around decade ago). So, they’ll be relying on Ten with the national/international news at 5pm while they’ll strictly focus on the Tasmanian news at 6pm. With this, hopefully they’ll also relaunch the presentation properly this time (the opener and chroma key set) to closely tie-in with the Ten News look and not go half-arsed as they did this time. I really hope they don’t go with a custom look too. But as I said before, I’m not expecting too much to change.

So, with strong rating Ten News Melbourne returning - and as their lead-in to 6pm local news - how many watching Ten News will stick around with WIN and not switch over to Southern Cross or TDT9? Interesting to see if their bulletin receives any sort of boost.

Still baffles me why they didn’t do this to start with rather than scheduling previous night’s Feud to lead with a 5.30 bulletin.

Edit: The report also mentioned that Lucy will present weeknights with Brent on sport. Weekends will probably be presented by Brent with Tom on sport from now on (for however long it lasts for that is! :yum:)

Edit #2: I wonder if Stephen and/or Candice will welcome back their Tasmanian viewers this evening?:yum:

On Twitter Candice did at least:

Dave’s going across to the 9/SCA local news set up. Unsure why you’re all scratching your heads. He’s one of the lucky ones.

Bad move. So if I want to see the days news on WIN I need to commit to 90 minutes from 5pm?

WIN is aware of viewing habits in 2016 right?

6pm should be a mix of local state and national news.

Is Candice Tasmanian? She spent a few years at Southern Cross Tas prior to Ten Melbourne. Quite a few Tasmanian reporters have popped up over there now.

I agree, it’s hard to site through and watch an hour bulletin with a toddler, I do miss the old half hour one. It would be good if Southern Cross could do what Ten and Nine does and have a quick weather part halfway through.

No change to Tas bulletin at all. Nothing to see here.

Exactly as expected, I think the “new look” was just that it was losing the national and international component. People will be pleased to know that the supers are still misaligned too.

Though it’s now a mostly state-based format, they have actually included a brief ‘national headlines’ into the second segment. And not that I’m terribly surprised, but it’s a bit disappointing they didn’t do a relaunch.

She moved to Tassie in 2006 after being offered a job at Southern Cross for a few years as you mentioned. She then moved back to Victoria and landed a job at ABC radio in Ballarat. Then got an offer from Ten Melbourne a couple years after that.

I think you’ll find that most of the reporters you see locally on SC and WIN are predominantly from Melbourne which they use as their springboard (same deal with most regional news bulletins, of course). Though quite a number of them have gone on to bigger and better things too: Nathan Templeton (7), Stephanie Anderson (9), Alicia Muling (9), Trent Dann (10), Elizabeth Anile (7). Georgia Love (10 reality show :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) just to name a few.

In case you weren’t aware, Lucy is actually Tassie born and bred.
WIN had a quick weather preview with the hour format, but Southern Cross don’t bother. They just have the usual ‘top headlines’ 30mins in.

@EyewitnessTV But Tasmania’s have shown they want a bulletin with local state and national news all in one. Look at how SC dominates. ABC News too. That is the formula Tasmanias want and like.

If WIN is to compete they need to offer that.

If I watch WIN, how am I meant to see the bis stories of the day from outside Tasmania. They expect me to watch from 5pm for an hour and a half?

They already had that until last week. Obviously, not enough were watching…

True, but I don’t think Tasmania can sustain two local newscasts competing against each other at 6pm. The market just isn’t big enough.

Why do you all keep saying this? Tasmania has had three local bulletins each night for the past 55 odd years, two of which at the same time and it’s been OK. The only downfall has been the decline in people watching TV and the fact there has been a little shuffling about the past couple of years.
