WIN News

It’s cringe … much like their content and presentation.

That would see the loss of the last journalist and camera operator in each of the other markets.

Is WIN News still in statewide summer mode?

No - back to local.

I know. WIN News is a waste of time anyway except in Canberra and Wollongong. It’s very sad the state these bulletins are in now with presentation of the Regional Queensland, Regional Victoria, Canberra and Tasmania bulletins centralised to Wollongong, each market except the Illawarra, Canberra and Tasmania cutting back from 4 reporters to 1 and 3 camera operators to 1 and going down to just 2 local stories. Seven urgently needs to enter the markets that don’t have a local news bulletin from them (originally from Prime) and grow their news business.

So WIN News was only in statewide summer mode for 2 weeks last month. Not going to lie the statewide format should be permanent as it’s better than the current format that’s marked as local when it’s not where you get traveller and health stories from interstate.

I wonder if Nine would’ve been able to afford producing half hour regional local news bulletins at 5:30pm from March 2017-March 2020 for Southern Cross Austereo. I would’ve much preferred if those regional news bulletins were in that format as I was sad when we lost Peter Hitchener between March 2017 and March 2020.

Why would Seven do that?

Seven News Melbourne seems to rate well in regional Victoria.

Because every other region needs a proper local news bulletin as we only have the shit semi local WIN News. If Seven News Melbourne rates well the regional bulletins can air at 5:30pm which is the time slot I’d want them to air in so I can watch the regional bulletin and then Nine News.

look im all for more local voices in the media too, but unfortunately it comes down to cost of developing the bulletins on Seven’s part

i mean it can be done, look at GWN7’s guide where they do it at the time you proposed, but it comes down to cost unfortunately

Do they really though?

It’s hard to justify starting a new local news bulletin once you factor in operational costs, ratings and the fact viewers are fleeing FTA for other more reliable local sources.

People have only gone to other reliable sources for local news ever since WIN cutback on local stories. I rely on the Ballarat Courier to hear what’s happening locally.

In general, people are moving to online sources not just people living rurally. Sadly regional Victoria’s only local TV news source is WIN, I do wish Seven ran local bulletins but I don’t think it would work.

I don’t think you understand that Seven / Nine / Ten are business to generate commercial revenue to stay afloat. Will the establishment of new local bulletins in these areas generate more money… the answer is NO. If Seven News Melbourne and The Chace were ratting terribly in these areas and if audiences were not shrinking, then yes there might be a need to reassess the option of introducing a local bulletin to Victoria.

I dunno if this just is further derailing the thread, but I think given how poorly WIN do at their news being able to cover late breaking news and the low amount of actual local content, they should look at moving to making a weekly local magazine show, rather than trying to do ‘news’ - their service just doesn’t match that.

If their remaining journalists could just work on investigative stories, you’d likely be able to get a far more substantial community service, and less of just reading out press releases and yesterday’s newspaper.

I’d pair it with a local sports program, to ensure they can meet the local content quotas, and likely to gather a wider audience than their 5:30 bulletins do.

Due to the Australian Open, WIN News will air at 5:30pm AEDT on 9Go! starting tonight. Plus 9Go! is now HD in WIN areas, so no more quality downgrade.

Much to my relief WIN News still have the old graphics. They still have the local city as background to the openers much to my relief. But I don’t know for how long.

Good to hear you are feeling relieved.

WIN News isn’t worth watching anymore, with only 2 local stories.
