Didn’t finish early. I fast forward through a lot of stuff that isn’t relevant to me so didn’t notice if it was padded out.
Agree, but has he ever done a live bulletin?
Not suggesting he go out and be the anchor of the 6pm news right away. But it’s a common practice, regional anchor becomes metro reporter to grow their career.
He would’ve been reading live sport and/or news back when WIN’s Maroochydore studio was still operational.
im in Wagga this weekend on family stuff, watching the Riverina version of WIN NEWS. No localism at all that i could tell. the reader refers to is as Riverina NEWS, but zero Riverina news and there is no hiding the travellers from Central West , Wollongong, Albury and Canberra. This is really bad. I hope someone from WIN monitors these threads, sport was Canberra Raiders NRL , Nth Qld v Dragons, then out of zero context JAred Constable turns up to read a short piece from the Albury O&M AFL league. You need to fix it WIN or pull it off the air.
People in Wagga support the Raiders and consider it (almost) their local team
The Illawarra bulletin isn’t much better.
There has been long weekend traffic delays on the Princes Highway heading south since mid afternoon yet it got zero mention in the bulletin. Long weekend holiday reporting focused on the snow fields with a report from Canberra based reporter Montanna Clare.
There was a looting rampage at a TK Maxx store in Shellharbour last night by a mob of kids on bikes. A major story in the local paper and it got reported on the Prime7 local news update just before 5pm. Prime had even acquired mobile phone vision to accompany the report. Not even a mention on WIN News.
High winds have been causing issues across the region this week. No vision or reporting in the news portion of the bulletin this week just the usual weather report.
Agriculture reporting has become a focus of the bulletin yet the Illawarra area has become a major urban centre.
They may as well not bother. The bulletin has become worse since Nine pulled out when affiliation went back to WIN. Hopefully Seven enters the market with some local reporting crews and shakes things up.
It’s no wonder they settled on a 5.30pm timeslot. Few people will see that the news operation has turned into what All Australian News was; a machine that meets quotas and nothing more. What a terrible fate for what was once a reputable news source.
At least we know Seven has a proven track record with reputable regional news. There’s no mystery. Just the fact they put Prime News on 7plus literally weeks after buying it shows they care way more than WIN.
I wonder why/how it gets so many viewers? Is it so ingrained that the regular viewer doesn’t know any better or are things we think make a good bulletin, not that important to WIN viewers? I realize it is difficult to compare as the markets don’t match up but in total people terms it is more popular than the Nine Local News that used to be shown on Southern Cross Nine for example and regularly makes the top 20 regional programs despite not airing in many markets.
You’ve got a point. Look at GWN7 News. There are nights where not one story is relevant to my viewing area. I think a lot of it is habitual viewing.
It’s a shocker alright! What ever happened to having reporters in court chasing hard hitting news? Even when vision is literally handed to them on a silver platter (such as the TXMax robbery you mentioned), it’s too much effort.
From what I’ve seen on WIN’s social media, they didn’t even bother covering the Libby Ruge trial in Woolongong a few weeks back! The circumstances around her death has been one of the biggest stories to come out of the Illawarra in recent years, even making national news; was sidelined for an update on WIN’s Lincoln Humphries’ new dance moves for the local dance festival.
It’s rare to see them covering court stories these days. You used to always see the cameras and reporters waiting to capture vision of people associated with cases when Nine was in town. They did cover the verdict in the Libby Ruge matter but no daily coverage as there has been in significant cases in the past.
What are you referring to when you say it gets so many viewers?
WIN News?
The regional WIN news operation is as good as dead, it is all that can be afforded with Nine affiliation, short of axing all the jobs that it does provide, better than nothing.
I don’t think 7 local news will reenter the Wollongong or Newcastle areas again. Why would 7 bother? Newcastle and Wollongong is too close to Sydney to warrant a seperate 7 news bulletin. Therefore no matter the current format WIN or NBN News are in, things are likely to stay the same.
WIN seem to be making a bit more of effort with the local content in Canberra of late. I mean the bulliten isn’t spectacular by any means but it does sort of still feel reasonably local including focus on the Legilsative Assembly when sitting. Worried about 7 perhaps? One of the few markets that might still be doing alright for them?
Tony . no they don’t. Wagga Supports Canberra because they play here once a year. Wagga has local sport that should and can be covered, anything Canberra Raiders can be told one or 2 nights a week, not everynight…
Not sure why WIN hasn’t hired you yet to run their news department, sounds like you’ve got it all figured out.
Yes, exactly what I said
