WIN Corporation

… that would involve effort and cost …

I thinks it just a sign of the times. I would expect the 10 signal to disappear in other regions soon.

I certainly hope Darwin Digital television aka ten Darwin is safe for now but for how long I don’t know

I wonder if Seven will stop broadcasting Nine and Ten channels in the GTS/BKN regions of Spencer Gulf and Broken Hill. I doubt it would be in Seven’s interest to run channels not aligned with and competing with them.

Doubt it, as long as it remains financially viable for them.

Meanwhile back to searching the best way to view 10 after WIN nukes it. Disappointing, not exactly keen on VAST

10 streaming is the best option, Starlink is getting more common in regional areas these days.

What’s going to happen with coverage of the Australian Moto GP on October 25 and the Australian F1 GP in April next year? Will WIN pre-empt their Nine programmes to show these events in the affected regions? Both are on the Government Anti-Siphoning List.

Broadcasters do not have to buy the rights to events on the list. If they do, the rules don’t set out how they must use them: they can broadcast the event in part, on delay, or not at all.

A bit concerning that FTA broadcasters don’t have to show it on FTA television at all when they own paid streaming platforms but that’s off topic.

Given nothing has happened in Mildura since 10 was taken off air there, probably nothing.

At least way, f they decide not to broadcast into Mildura, it would be their decision rather than someone else’s.

I can’t see this happening due to 10play being available and regional broadcasters having 0 interest in working with Network 10 at the moment.

It’s clear WIN have priority with their Nine Regional network so eliminating underperforming 10 stations is a win for Nine in these markets.

Some sports (its believed both the NRL and AFL do, others YMMV) have access availability conditions, which requires the FTA broadcaster to have the capacity to have their coverage available across the nation. Now the FTAs have streaming rights its probably less of an issue though.

Even though we’re talking small numbers (although if Darwin, Tasmania and WA fall also that will shift), it may hurt Ten’s chances in the future to get some sports.

I’m interested in seeing what happens in these Solus markets with Seven - while they’re probably a more advertiser-friendly option than Ten is/was - if costs cant be controlled, you’ve got to wonder if WIN will jettison them too.

Seven’s AFL and cricket contracts should ensure they remain on air in WIN solus markets.

I see what you did there…

Given the discussion paper on spectrum reform, I wonder why WIN aren’t holding on to see if they could get compensated for shutting stations down/combining them, rather than turn off of their own volition.

As for Seven - there was mention of the SA service on WIN containing their GTS/BKN noodle updates - potentially that’s part of the cost shift that kept those on air. I’ll find somewhere more appropriate than WIN’s thread for some rambling on ideas there.

As I previously mentioned, on LG Smart TV’s, Channel 10 channels are available including Nickelodeon which isn’t available in Northern NSW via 10 Northern NSW. I know ot requires a good internet connection, but for areas with reasonable connections, it is an option.

FYI, I am in the Hunter Valley so I am aware access works in at least some regional areas

Screw them. They shouldn’t get compensated.

In my honest opinion, if I were a FTA viewer, with the channels going away this makes terrestrial FTA seem unreliable compared to IPTV (aka the metro network’s apps or other means), why would I plug in an aerial if my favourite channels were to go away in the next year or so?

In the long term its absolutely not benefiting WIN at all. With less eyes on their broadcasts, slowly but surely its a death by a thousand cuts. After all, you don’t need an aerial to watch 10 programs anymore, from Mildura and now through to Griffith, Riverland and Mt Gambier, why bother with an aerial knowing the channels will go away in a few years time?

Would be fascinating to see IPTV v DVB-T takeup in a market like Bendigo where all commercial networks have been impacted, and for an extended period of time at that. No doubt a percentage of the audience haven’t come back.

Whatever happened with Freeview’s DVB-I trials? Online reports said trials would start in early 2026 but I can’t find further news on developments.

Once the service is up and running for real, it could be the solution to small markets losing terrestrial service.
