WIN Corporation

“The short-term agreement with Paramount has concluded,” WIN said in a statement.

“WIN and Paramount recognise that providing these Network 10 services in these markets is no longer viable. This is a business decision that reflects the realities of regional broadcasting.”

… only in areas not serviced by a terrestrial provider …

… thanks to Bob Hawke looking after Kerry Packer so that Big Kezza would help Bob to win more elections forty years ago … it makes you wonder what would have happened if that daft decision wasn’t made back then …

That got changed in light of the Mildura situation so viewers in “service deficient” areas were then eligible for VAST.

… yep, same as “not serviced by a terrestrial provider” just different words describing the same thing …

Just merge the South Australian regionals into the Adelaide market. May as well…

… that was one of the early “aggregation” models in the DoTaC White Paper back in 1985 …

Doubt that:

  1. Bruce would want to give up those licenses, and
  2. Nine and 10 would want to take on regions which likely don’t make much money

WIN is still the terrestrial provider though, that hasn’t changed. They’re just not going to provide the Network 10 services hence the term “service deficient”

… yep it has, WIN was the “terrestrial provider” of the 10 signal, now it won’t be …

probably not too different from where we have ended up.

… yep, but it would have been a smoother ride and wouldn’t have involved hundreds of millions of shareholder dollars being flushed in the process …

Heh, I’m not too far off the mark it seems.

  1. Do they make any money?
  2. Economies of scale? Cover the entire state from Adelaide?

Nine and 10 get a guaranteed amount of revenue from these markets without paying a single cent on any of the equipment needed to broadcast to the region. Buy the stations, and then, you aren’t guaranteed a stream of revenue if it all instantly goes back into keeping the transmitters online.

Tell the people of those regions to buy a LG smart TV because the LG channels have channel 10 channels available on the LG channels

Just merge the MIA licence into the southern NSW licence. The ACMA should have done this when the analogue switch off happened.

Maybe the Seven and Nine services in these areas could air 10 programs on a per-program basis?

I agree. And the Mildura licence with the rest of Victoria.

They should also consider merging the Broken Hill licence with Southern NSW. I know that Broken Hill has some ties with South Australia (e.g. using South Australian time and getting programming from South Australia) but there is already a precedent. The northern NSW market includes the Gold Coast which is in Queensland, yet the Northern NSW stations in the Gold Coast are more Queensland oriented (e.g. operating on standard time in the summer, getting news from Brisbane, etc.).

It feels very much like the horse has bolted on fixing the licence area issue

The channel 10 issue in these markets were program delivery issues with WIN not being able to make a deal with 10 but In Mildura It was a totally different story MDV hadn’t been making a profit since It started broadcast In 2006, This was partly the reason why the service went off-air also the transmitter was nearing the end of its life & would have had to be replaced. Those living In Mildura can get 10 using the VAST service, but it’s not cheap to install so I couldn’t imagine many people taking this up.

Some people have suggested that Mildura be merged Into the Western Victoria TV1 licence area this is good In theory but would the 10 network want to expand into a new market where It won’t make them any form of revenue.
