Very unsurprising…
Seven and WIN agree to new broadcast deal
The Seven Network and WIN Network have reached a new content agreement which has seen Seven’s channels return to the Riverland, Griffith and Mount Gambier via aerial transmission this afternoon.
Both Seven and WIN acknowledge the significant impact of free-to-air television in regional communities and the importance of providing news, sport, entertainment, and a voice to regional Australians.
We thank the people of the Riverland, Mount Gambier and Griffith communities for their patience while we worked through this matter.
Seven’s programming resumed at 5pm AEST.
Just in time for the AFL
Perhaps Seven saw that there was little to no interest in live streaming via 7Plus - nobody signed up to watch Border Security or Stranded on Honeymoon Island.
Not suspicious at all.
So WIN was just playing hardball this whole time. Can’t blame them if Seven were being unreasonable. I guess we’ll never know.
Good. Common sense prevailed.
According too black box it would have been a breach of 7s contract with the afl
The AFL has been quiet publicly, but I strongly suspect they have had a lot to say to Seven behind closed doors.
TV Blackbox reporting this is a multi year deal.
Seems like Seven has had to cough up some money.
I’d be playing hardball too if they were expecting up to 50% (just guessing!)
WIN probably used the fact that SWM have paid effectively next to nothing for the old SCA assets
Called it. The AFL has a lot of influence and would never have allowed its national coverage to be compromised.
Who bet the overs on the WDT line?
WIN could offer them 100% of ad revenue given they don’t insert their own…
Given most affiliations have worked on a revenue share arrangement, there’s kinda no precedent for how this would work - unless all those deals for revenue share had a backstop minimum payment built in?
the contract probably has a condition that Seven has national transmission coverage. Similar to Nine’s old cricket deal when they would constantly tussle with WIN before the 2016 affiliation switch. But Nine had a backup plan with SBS who would broadcast their coverage in this sort of situation. Obviously Seven didn’t have a contingency.
I reckon WIN demanded free affiliation from Seven given they don’t insert local advertising on the 100% metro dirty feed they put to air. Wonder if Seven would directly insert their own local advertising to get some revenue WIN won’t supply? Surely there are local advertisers that would love to buy ad spots during AFL?
Yes there are. Particularly Dean Owen’s Owen Toyota business in Griffith, who last year expressed concerns that other networks would ditch local advertising/become full-time metro dirty feeds and their local identity on TV would be gone forever.
I find it odd that WIN gave up selling advertising on their Seven channels to begin with. Surely Seven rates higher on average than Nine in those markets.
Perhaps today’s outcome was the deal WIN had been waiting for and they’ll recommence selling spots on Seven?
They better do so. If they do, it’ll certainly make Dean Owen of Owen Toyota in Griffith as happy as ever. He would start booking ad spots on Seven through WIN again once more. I would imagine other advertisers across Griffith and South East SA doing the same. Boycott WIN9 and WIN10 if you can, advertise on WIN7.
