Because essentially he was a chat show host. Before New Faces, he was on The Don Lane Show and did talkback radio for decades.
And how did that go?
He may be likeable enough but he probably doesn’t have the qualifications to be a game show host.

I agree that it should be a local host though.
He was also a game show host, hosting Bert’s Family Feud on Nine.
I dont think there are any “qualifications” required to be a game show host. You just need confidence, charisma and presence.
That’s right. He was a chat show host who made a good game show host.
two examples of people in each group that worked - Eddie McGuire - The Footy Show was more or less a talk show about AFL
Cornelia Francis did an ok job on The Weakest Link.
As for qualifications, what qualifications do you really need to be a game show host? There is no guarantee either of these had them.
You need to be able to engage with the contestants in small talk and have good banter.
I’m not saying actors can’t do it but chat show hosts are more likely to better at it.
Graham Norton wasn’t really chosen for this so much as being the most convenient option for the cheap piggybacking of the UK WoF reboot, same as what happened with the Stephen Fry “Australian” version of Jeopardy - you’d not make the decision for them as hosts of an Aussie version if it was actually recorded here, but using them as people experienced with the format from doing the UK versions means it’s a more polished first impression.
I think Wheel probably doesn’t really lean on the hosts all that much - it has a much higher play along at home factor - which carries it, whereas something like Deal you have almost no show other than how the host carries it forward. I think it’s probably how Rob Elliot as a fairly generic radio host was able to make the format work - personable without being a star.
i dont mind who we get if Ten takes it forward as long as its not Kyle Sandilands
The show gets a front cover on TV Week this week, however Graham Norton talked very little about it in the feature interview.
It was probably another interview that TV Week repurposed to tie it in with this show.
Canned laughter and applause. Ugh!
The format of the hour-long version is quite different from the half-hour version that aired on Seven all those years ago.
This is not great.
It’s like Graham doesn’t know what he’s doing.
No ‘hostess’ revealing letters is weird.
The wheel is slick looking though.
Have to say, I’m quite enjoying Wheel in primetime. Very different for 10.
I’d like to solve it please:
“this version isn’t that great”
Yeah. He does seem lost. I couldn’t watch past the first commercial break.
What did he win for winning the bonus puzzle?
The prizes are very low compared to the US version too.
A trip to Vietnam.
The money values are pathetic. They’re so low.
This is just like the UK version. It’s a tad slow and Graham has the same presenting style in the UK version.
You appreciate the energy someone like Grant Denyer has, as a game show host, when you see someone like this.
These contestants are idiots. They have no strategy and can’t even solve some of the simplistic puzzles.
