Wentworth’s fifth season launched last month on Foxtel’s showcase channel and the next 12 episode season will shoot on location through winter in Melbourne to be scheduled on Foxtel in 2018.

Wentworth premiered in 2013 and is Foxtel’s longest running original drama. The series is distributed by FremantleMedia International and is now seen in more than 140 territories and there are productions in Dutch, German and Flemish.

The drama has been lauded by critics at home and abroad and acknowledged with award wins and nominations. Most recently, Wentworth won the 6th AACTA Award for Most Outstanding Drama Series in December and was nominated in the 59th TV WEEK Logie Awards in the popular voted Best Drama Series category and the industry voted categories of Most Outstanding Drama Series, Most Outstanding Supporting Actress for Nicole da Silva as Franky Doyle, and Most Outstanding Actress for Danielle Cormack in her final season as Bea Smith.

Foxtel Head of Drama Penny Win said “As Foxtel’s longest running original drama, Wentworth continues to set a high bar for our local production slate.

“There is so much yet to unfold with season five premiering now in Australia on Foxtel before any details should be revealed about the sixth season. My lips are sealed other than to say Marcia Gardner and the writers continue to excel in setting up intriguing story arcs and finely crafted scripts for the wonderfully talented Wentworth cast to bring to life.”

FremantleMedia Director of Drama Jo Porter said “Getting to a sixth season is something none of us take for granted. Key to this is the unwavering dedication to the show by the incredible Wentworth audience both in Australia and around the world. Like us they are drawn to our exceptional cast who embody the diverse, complex and intriguing characters who populate the intense world of Wentworth and its high stakes and compelling stories.

“None of this would be possible without our wonderful partners Foxtel. Together with series producer Pino Amenta, the wonderful team of writers, directors, crew, and cast, we all look forward to opening the gates of Wentworth for the next chapter. Knowing what they have in store fans won’t be disappointed and we can’t wait to get started.”

Great news. Sold to 140 countries is a brilliant effort.

I thought this season would lose it’s mojo with Danielle Cormack gone but it hasn’t with the great cast of actors it has. With her leaving, it has opened doors for actors to shine through. I’m finding this season better than last season

Season 1 will have its FTA premiere on ABC on Thursday, April 12 at 9pm.

Foxtel today announced acclaimed Australian actors Leah Purcell and Susie Porter along with one of Australia’s rising stars Rarriwuy Hick will join the cast of Wentworth for Season 6, which premieres on Tuesday June 19 – streamed on Foxtel Now and seen on Foxtel’s showcase.

Leah Purcell plays Rita Connors who presents as a spirited, independent indigenous woman, closely affiliated with the Conqueror biker gang. Rita arrives at Wentworth on remand with her trial and sentence pending for Robbery Armed with an offensive weapon.
Leah Purcell said “When I was approached to be part of the Wentworth family, I couldn’t believe it. I’ve watched the show from the very first series, not just to support Australian drama but also because of all the amazing, talented, beautiful and strong female actors that make up this show. I love it!

“Being able to collaborate on Rita and help with her storyline was a privilege. You dream of this type of role; it’s normally the blokes that get all the kick-arse characters, the physical aspect to her was a big plus. Developing her with all the talented and supportive people behind and in front of the camera, with the whole Wentworth team; what an honour.”

Susie Porter enters Wentworth as powerful and feared criminal matriarch Marie Winter. Marie is a seducer and the lynch pin behind a diverse sex trafficking and prostitution industry. But despite controlling a criminal empire, she has never been to jail, always managing to cleverly remain at arm’s length from the law until now with her sentence pending for Assault - Reckless infliction of grievous bodily harm.

Susie Porter said “I absolutely loved working on Wentworth season 6. It’s amazing to be part of such female driven show. The storylines are full of twists and turns and the stakes are always high. It’s just so much fun to be part of it.”

Rarriwuy Hick is fit young boxer Ruby Mitchell who finds herself at Wentworth for assault and resisting arrest, putting her promising boxing career on hold. She’s hot-headed, smart-mouthed, funny and loyal. Frustrated by her inability to box, Ruby’s intense flashes of uncontrollable anger see her transferred to H Block during a riot.

Rarriwuy Hick said “For a young actor, the role of Ruby is one you dream of coming your way. She’s feisty, funny and incredibly complex which makes playing her challenging and so satisfying. To be part of such a respected ensemble is a real privilege.”

Following season five’s jaw-dropping finale, season six resumes with almost all of Wentworth’s inmates and officers stunned by the apparent joint escape of Franky Doyle (Nicole da Silva) and Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe).

As Sonia Steven’s (Sigrid Thornton) life and Vera Bennett’s (Kate Atkinson) career hang in the balance, Kaz Proctor (Tammy MacIntosh) steels herself for Top Dog duties again and the truth surrounding the Freak’s demise weighs heavily on Will Jackson (Robbie Magasiva) and Jake Stewart (Bernard Curry). Boomer (Katrina Milosevic) pieces together the events of Sonia’s now apparent poisoning and Liz (Celia Ireland) is targeted, while Allie (Kate Jenkinson) finds solice for a short moment in avenging Bea’s death – however, peace is only fleeting behind the walls of Wentworth.

Production commences on season 7

Production has commenced on the seventh season of Foxtel’s multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed drama series Wentworth, to premiere in 2019 on showcase.

Since its debut in 2013, Wentworth has continued to enthral viewers around the world with its gripping characters and often controversial, hard-edged storylines about life behind bars for some of the most notorious and damaged women ever seen on Australian television.

Foxtel’s Head of Drama and Wentworth Executive Producer Penny Win said: “It’s hard to believe we are already rolling the cameras on season seven of Wentworth. It feels like only yesterday we were reintroducing Foxtel viewers to such iconic characters like Bea Smith and Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson. The way in which our audience, both locally and internationally, has connected with the show goes to prove that people will watch, embrace, love and continue to support quality Australian drama.

Went and paid a visit to where Wentworth is filmed and where they have been since season 4. You really can’t see much but here are some photos anyway. I didn’t get a photo, but you could also see the brawler parked on the side behind the main entrance.

I was watching a video and they originally wanted to use this location but it wasn’t ready in time to start filming season 1. Hence why they were at Clayton for S1-3.

The promos i’ve been seeing for this are brilliant. Kudos to the Foxtel team behind it. If commercial networks and the ABC sold their content like this, I suspect more viewers would engage.

Peter Ford reported today on 3AW that Wentworth has been axed as the set is currently being demantled. If true sounds like Season 7 will be its last

https://www.3aw.com.au/peter-ford-top-australian-drama-axed/

It needs to finish on top and while the quality is still there. It can’t go on forever. I found the last episode the first I was not genuinely hooked on. Susie Porter’s character and performance is weak and looks like stunt casting.

Interesting Ps. at the bottom of this tweet from Steve Molk about the rumours.

I think it’s referring to Sigrid’s appearance on Studio 10 this morning which Sarah tweeted about.

Don’t understand why they would axe it unless the creators decided to end it.
