Nine’s Olympic coverage continued to dominate across all time slots on Tuesday. Nine’s share was another incredible 54.5% its best Tuesday of the year. That saw Sevene manage about 18%, ABC 11%, 10 on 10% and SBS with 5%.

The headline Night Session was close to Monday’s result on 2.03 million while Night Session 2 was the highest of the games so far at 1.76 million – up 350k on Monday.

The afternoon session and Paris Encore were lower than Monday but the early morning surged, up +200k to an huge 718k.

Nine News had another huge result with 1.54 million while Today in Paris dipped slightly but still averaged 700k.

Meanwhile, Seven’s News continued to hold up well, steady with the previous week while Home and Away also proved just as popular as usual on 850k to be ahead of ABC in the timeslot. Britain’s Got Talent, however, was uncompetitive with just over 300k.

ABC’s I Was Actually There managed to get over 400k while ABC News and 7.30 suffered against the competition.

10’s The Cheap Seats and Dogs Behaving Badly were well down while The Project made the top 30 yesterday but was down 100k on its usual results.

7 wouldn’t be too disappointed since they are holding up well. They are just running dead after 7:30pm. But Dancing on Sunday did also hold up so they could have better than 350k if they showed something better

Looks like Seven will be relying on News, Home and Away, AFL and DWTS to hold up it’s ratings until the end of the games.

Last games, 10 was getting 600,000 metro 1.1 million national for Survivor against the Tokyo Olympics and Nine had Beauty and the Geek with 540k metro - 700k national. These games the competition is nuch weaker.

Yep. Olympic viewership is basically on par with Tokyo nights but 7 & 10 are running dead while in 2021 9 had something new showing & 10 stuck with one of their premier shows

There’s not really much point in trying to compete if you’re going to exclude the games from reporting at the end of the year.

Suffice to say though the Games are probably proving to be more popular than they might have otherwise been given the lack of competition.

Except if it comes neck and neck at the end of the year, in which Nine will include the Olympic weeks in their data, like Seven did in 2016 IIRC.

In that regard, Nine’s rivals are actually doing worse, explains Nine’s unbelievable 50%+ metro broadcast shares (used to be a rare occurrence) every night so far, which Seven achieved with Tokyo but not every night and think it took some days and didn’t really with Rio, you’d have to go back to Nine’s London 2012 or probably consistently at Beijing 2008.

Only real standout is Seven’s news, Nine would quietly probably be a little disappointed so far, especially east coast, going off Seven News’ Tokyo 2020, though admittedly Nine News have been behind (nationally) and are well up, both with the Olympics and this year.

Do we know some of the overnight codings?

I think “Late Extended” would be midnight to 2am OzTAM cut-off. “Overnight” 2-4am perhaps? And “Early Morning” 4am - 7am maybe (though likely later to boost that mass audience waking up for breakfast and work before “Today”).

And would “9Gem: Replay” really be 9 hours (8am-5pm)? As is the case today. Though usually from midday or 1pm I think, as EPG has and it had been live surfing pre-lunch time until today from Tahiti.

2021 the Olympics were in a favourable timezone and Australia was in lockdown. This is the first Olympics without lockdowns/restrictions since 2018. Ratings have been good so far over the first 4 nights

Beat me to it. Not really realistic to compare the two

Yeah, but that’s not the Olympics fault, it landed when it did (even delayed one year). For comparisons, we always compare to the previous and the ones before that. Seven in their releases used to as well.

TBH I reckon Nine’s numbers have been better than expected and would be harder to achieve, already two 2m+ averages (yes with bvod), given no lockdowns and poorer time zone for us. The beautiful Paris location and early Gold rush would help. But like the last, which was feel-good escapism, viewers are clearly loving this. Yes also helps the other networks have completely given up bar DWTS and HYBPA.

In Tokyo, we saw numbers get bigger as each day went on and rocket in the second week for the athletics, let’s see if that happens again, Nine would be confident. Wonder if 9Gem will carry a bit of it while the swimming (extra day too) is still going or conversely move athletics onto the main and swimming to the secondary.

69 and 86% in 16-39s on broadcast and bvod respectively is insane for this era, the young adults and older teens lapping the Olympics up :boom: You’d hope Nine are on the phone to the agencies and advertisers selling this further ASAP! No wonder Nine have really reinvigorated and been creative with their coverage, including some commentators and features, playing into these youngest key age brackets.

–

edit

Unless Nine News really lifts, yes could also be the different time zome in Paris compared to Tokyo with the events schedule, but would Nine perhaps be regretting not keeping TP airing during the Olympics, as Seven did during at least Rio and Tokyo with Chase? Also could’ve done Olympic themed specials and seen audiences further skyrocket and kept momentum, as well as seeing higher news results on-par with Seven’s during Tokyo and Rio. Nine really made a decision to prioritise their Olympics and live events including the athletes let alone Australians and we have to admire them for that, maybe it’ll pay off, they need a live event with an Aussie or exciting medal event I reckon. As Seven over the years found wasn’t always guaranteed at 5/5:30pm, same for Seven and Nine with the Aus Open.
