Tuesday was the biggest night of tennis this year with The Australian Open up to its highest session rating so far of 664,000 and Nine on 36.8%. While Seven stayed competitive with the Big Bash, ABC dropped two and 10 lost three as the second episode of The Gladiators saw its audience halve from the premiere.

The Night session of the Australian Open was up 20,000 on Monday’s high and included the biggest audiences so far along the east coast. The session included the end of Thanasi Kokkinakis’s five-set victory. The match that started in the afternoon saw 88k watching on 9Go! at 6pm. Later, with an Australian also playing, the Night Session 2 also did well with 441k.

Earlier, Seven News had a big 190k win at 6pm with victories in all markets except Melbourne. That followed another +500k result for The Chase Australia at 5.30pm.

At 7pm Home and Away managed 425k while The BBL had a modest 268,000 for a game that featured a final ball victory. Perth delivered its biggest audience of this season so far.

ABC”s Back Roads slipped 50k from the season debut on a competitive night as the debut of McCartney 1, 2, 3 did a modest 231k.

And for 10, The Gladiators slumped to just under 200k after the premiere did 400k to just make the top 20.

Gladiators lost nearly half of its audience from Monday’s premiere. Clearly some viewers had enough.

That was despite the match starting at 4.40pm local time. It beat the tennis and 9News.

Ouch for Gladiators.

Gladitors. Wow. Those were the numbers I was expecting :joy:

Another close win to Alicia and Tom in Melbourne.

Big oof on Gladiators :joy: … 400k would have been respectable given the circumstances (summer, against the tennis), but 200k … does not bod well.

I know there will typically be a drop off from Ep 1 to Ep 2 … but have we ever seen half of the audience disappear like that. And what will it be tonight?

Oh dear, gladiators is cooked. Another failed strategy from 10.

Gladiators ratings are going to be a big news story and another avenue for media to attack 10 - not good but not surprising given it feels like a budget version.

I can’t help but feel gladiators would have benefitted from being once a week. It does not strike me as a multi-night a week format.

Oh dear.

Yep, 10 executives will not be happy this morning. Wrong show to go up against the Tennis and Cricket. Unfortunately, 10 has no traction going into February.

One wonders how it might’ve done after the tennis, probably no match for Married, but vs Aus Idol and key demos, could’ve been rather interesting and would’ve provided even more weeks to drum up marketing for Gladiators :man_shrugging:

Should’ve began at the start of the month as originally planned

The ratings have spoken. 10 has ruined Gladiators.

They had goodness knows how long to drum up publicity for Gladiators already … maybe the slight change in time (airing a sports oriented show away from major sport events) increases it slightly … but one look has turned viewers off … and a dud show is a dud show.

Best case, they hit 500k on launch and 250k on ep 2 had they aired later.

Look its not the greatest show, but yes it should have aired as per its originally planned date. Or even in December in lieu of The Bachelor.

What will they reboot next? Man O Man?

I agree that a start a week earlier would have been better.

Key demo ranking last night show it is a young audience - 8th in 25-54 and 16-39 it was 7th.

They flooded us with publicity. That was not the problem. A real sporting event like the Australian Open is always going to smash a fake reality sport show. I had no interest in watching Gladiators but then again I barely watched the first or second time around. I think perhaps I’m A Celebrity would do better against the tennis. It did in the past.

Gladiators in December and The Bachelor now probably would have worked better for both shows.
