Triple M Network

Is anybody else getting really tired of this now?

Would we really care if the name wasn’t Ozzest 100?

It’s only another measly countdown.

If that’s all they did, it would have stirred up some buzz and then it would have died down quickly.

But they intentionally provoked controversy and have turned it into a political statement.

I think it’s also worth remembering that for more than a decade, JJJ refused to play indigenous performers who rapped in ‘American’ (or at least non-ocker bogan Australian) accents.

Ollie Wards, having come from New Zealand, knows and appreciates the intricacies of such a issue.

JJJ’s move is a great one. But Triple M filling the spot vacated by JJJ is also to be applauded.

The two can coexist. The Triple M move is purely a commercial decision, not a political one.

I disagree. A radio station running a countdown on Australia Day sounds like an average Australia Day - hardly a move to be ‘applauded’. Additionally, they’ve deliberately caused controversy for their own commercial gain. None of what they’ve done I would classify as deserving of applause.

Of course, but their message to subscribers was a politically charged one - deliberately aimed at Triple J and moreover their choice around the date of the Hottest 100.
Reality is, Triple J will be playing more Aussie songs on Aus day than before (and they’ve announced special Oz Day programming). Triple M know this, of course, but the temptation to have a jab was obviously too great.

I don’t think anyone’s arguing the merit of a radio station playing songs on an arbitrary day. The controversy comes from Triple M’s deliberate move to commercialise and capitalise on an important national discussion.

Typical.

So ummm… You’ve never had a great Australia Day listening to the Hottest 100? Only ‘average’? I remember being at Australia Day parties in Brisbane and being the radio nut I am secretly tuning into 96.1 from the Northern Rivers and hearing the songs an hour ahead…

I’d make random ‘predictions’ lol.

Yeah but it just seems a hodgepodge of citizenship ceremonies, random music and a visit to the Yabun music festival… which begs the question? Why an indigenous music festival on Jan 26?

Not really, no. I don’t listen to Triple J much and even struggle with the Hottest 100. Radio nut or not, it says a lot more about you than the radio station if the decider of the quality of your Australia Day is th arbitrary music one radio station or another plays.

So you’ve got options then. As does everyone on Aus Day. Pretty much every station across the country runs ‘special’ programming so you have just as many options for the day as you otherwise would have. This way you can listen to Triple M and the Hottest 100 all on the same weekend.

As I said, Triple M can do what they like - and there wouldn’t be a controversy had their statement simply said ‘we’re running an Oz 100 countdown on Australia day’.
They invited controversy knowing full well what they were doing as a ploy to grab some free publicity. To be honest, even Wil Anderson’s disapproval of it could be seen by the cynical as a ploy to exacerbate the discussion and therefore the publicity.

That would be a hard argument to make when one only has to take a quick glance at Anderson’s retweets to understand that his stance about the countdown is aligned with his political beliefs

I known that it’s in line with his political beliefs, but the more cynical might suggest part of the reason he tweeted about it at all was to exacerbate the publicity - ‘Triple M presenter defies management’ or whatever the headline would read…

It’s not like it would be the first time a controversy has been entirely concocted in order to get some free publicity, especially in rado land…

I wouldn’t agree with that statement.

If anything Triple M is the most niche serving of all of the commercial FM stations in Sydney. It only targets males, a fair chunk of those do like rock, sport and comedy.

Triple M just played some of Corey Taylor’s (from heavy metal band Slipknot and also Stone Sour) favourite songs.

Interestingly, he chose Duran Duran’ s “Girls On Film” … a song not normally heard on Triple M these days.

It was good to hear it though.

So now their high profile Breakfast and Drive presenters have spoken out against their own station’s management, I wonder how awkward relations will be after they go through with this countdown.

What if they reconsidered? Could that give them some much needed good publicity?

Just voted for AB Original and John Farnham’s You’re the Voice.

Management would be relishing the continuing publicity. Don’t think it will make any difference post-countdown
