My bad. Corrected.

Part of it is the we as a society are becoming less accepting of poor behavior, but more so, usually when some makes a gaff they’re likable enough and there’s no need to rub salt in the wound. With Marty, he’s an arsehole. Everyone in the industry knows why women hate working with him so everyone’s happy to go a bit harder.

It’s also SCA Melbourne’s industry night with advertisers tonight, so they knew they needed to do something swiftly or it would completely derail the “party”.

Interesting comment in this reaction from Gus Worland that he tried to encourage the station to do better in this space

I do think its a fine line to tread. You dont want to create a scenario where the mass pile on leads to someone taking thier own life. Im sure no one wants that kind of outcome.

Marty isnt the first person to say something stupid on air and nor will he be the last. Not all would be able to handle the last few days of scrutiny.

This. Without downplaying the rightful scrutiny and pile on, at what point has someone endured enough trial by media?

I think the decision to end the show was good in the circumstances, and the comparisons as a form of ‘Kyle lite’ have some merit, but hopefully there is an internal support network and everybody can learn and move on from the situation in due time.

I disagree. The station’s reaction by parting ways with Marty sends a stronger message in my opinion. Strong statement that behaviour like that will not be tolerated.

He only got sacked because he got called out by the public and other media outlets.

He didn’t get into any trouble over these comments

Marty’s comments on the Matildas were certainly in poor taste, and his endometriosis comments very insensitive (and arguably worse)- however the media scrutiny and pile-on has achieved its desired outcome (and in swift time) and Marty is no longer on the air.

I would hope that this can put a full stop on things and the furore dies down from here- there’s nothing good that will come from continuing the pile-on and kicking the man while he is down.

True but the fact he was there in the first place still reinforces the perception.

Poor form today on 3MMM, actually heard an advert for the Marty sheargold show today . Surely somebody would have been capable of preventing that going to air?

One day is nothing, I heard Boxing Day sales ads mid-January on Smooth. They’re all hopeless at times with this stuff.

And would’ve been the reason he was sacked in the first place. Can’t be slagging off your charity partner…

“Dare we dream”? Wouldn’t you half-call KIIS’ The Pick-Up an all female drive show?

It’s so easy to rewrite history to make yourself look like a hero.

And now Ben Fordham is defending him. Fuck that nepo baby Fordham.

Having read the article a couple of times, I’ve got a different opinion to you on this.

I’m not convinced Ben actually defended Marty. Ben provided extra context around why Marty said what he did, but I can’t see anywhere in the article where Ben tries to minimise or forgive what Marty said.

I should say, I’m not a Ben Fordham listener, I just prefer to make up my own mind about what was said rather than relying on a click bait headline.

Key quotes from the article from Fordham:

“He knows that the joke didn’t land”

“There’s something that you need to know about Marty Sheargold’s style of comedy, and I know this because I’ve listened to his podcasts for a long time: he says things all the time that he does not mean,”

“That’s not me defending him, he knows that he’s made a mistake, he’s acknowledged it, he did the wrong thing.”

Having listened to Marty on and off for a number of years, I agree with the point about Marty’s style of comedy. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think this article’s proven that Ben actually defended Marty, right?

I get your points, but personally I’m a bit over people claiming that people like Marty (and Trump) “say things they don’t mean” all the time, and it’s on the listener to just accept that.

If they don’t mean things, they shouldn’t say them.

I can’t help but be reminded of the famous 2007 Patrice O’Neal vs Sonia Ossorio discussion on Fox News about whether radio hosts should lose their jobs for making offensive jokes.

Trying to frame Marty as some right wing social media troll podcaster like some elements of the media are trying to do is ridiculous.

Fordham is pointing out of the obvious. It was bad attempt to humour that’s been blown completely out of proportion.
