I was thinking more along the lines of a more polished album rock format presented by real music DJ’s who know their rock.
Anyone want to guess which band Triple M had at #1 in today’s countdown (Gone But Not Forgotten) ie dead singers/members?
Spoiler
It’s A Long Way To The Top AC/DC
They seem to have a penchant for making this artist #1 in Countdowns. They were #1 in the recent GOAT Albums Countdown too.
It’s a shame how it all turned out, the whole idea showed potential as being a wider playlist than the mainline stations for the listener who listens all day and doesn’t want to hear the same stuff over and over… but ended up just being another station that mostly played the same stuff over and over.
When they wonder why some of the DAB stations rate so poorly, surely the constant rebranding has something to do with it?
Recuperating Marty Sheargold eyeing return to spotlight (Herald Sun)
Gigging with Sam Pang, Mick Molloy and Lawrence Mooney in February, but no confirmation if he will return to Triple M.
They said goodbye and thanked Lehmo on the final show of the year, which seems like confirmation he will be back next year.
Marty back Jan 15
bloody cricket i was enjoying the ratings break lots of music
Yes I do wish they would concentrate on being a music station. Same in the footy season. On a seperate note, I do prefer regional M’s over Capital. Me as a 52 year old male, the regional playlist is far more listenable that the capital playlist.
yeah im the opposite i prefer the metro playlist it i find the regionals need to stick to a format rock or pop people complain about the metro playlist buty i think thats because modern rock just isnt of the same calibre
Now you get lots of ads.
I was listening at work today. Tuned in just before the last talk break before the anthems. Live read into news, ad, ad, traffic, ad etc for 10 minutes.
In my honest and humble opinion, the Triple M Regional log is kind of okay, but the way that their cross contaminating their log with the modern pop music you would hear on HIT/2DAY/THE FOX alongside adult contemporary music from the 80s and 90s is kind of jarring, for example hearing Ed Sheeran (an artist I would mostly associate with HIT) alongside Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston or P!nk, etc after a Midnight Oil or Cold Chisel song. Plus the selections of music for their versions of their countdown such as hearing Backstreet Boys and Ace of Base for the 90s countdown on the “12 Countdowns of Christmas” made me feel bewildered.
I still remember in 2020 when the Regionals decided to follow the Metros and became a Modern Rock/Classic Rock station compared to the WSFM/2GB/Smooth FM mishmash they are now from 2022-present. Just my two cents.
The regionals sounded great when they went Rock’s Greatest Hits. Only problem was that the ratings went down.
In most cases, they have to broaden their playlists in markets with fewer stations (to appeal to a wider audience). When it’s too niche (ie. all rock), you lose audience. Sucks for those who may only like particular styles of music, but like I said, it’s a necessity in markets with only one or two stations.
I love it when the regionals took Brisbane Rock’s Greatest Hits log back then. The Brisbane log was a lot more adventurous then the other.
My perfect Triple M would be merge the regional playlist with metro, rest some flogged stuff and add about 500 more songs. Local music based drive similair to WA regional (drive with Cliff) and ditch to footy and cricket maybe onto DAB or something.
and no sport or comedy shows… it’s all about the music, presented by intelligent announcers who love their music and know it inside out. That’s what Triple M was built on.
May as well listen to Spotify
The difference is having the music intelligently presented, interspersed with news, weather and other info. Spotify can’t do that.
Having said that, it probably won’t be long before radio (and streaming services like Spotify) have the capability to harness AI voices to present a ‘look live’ program like that. One advantage with streaming is that you could specify what you want to hear eg. male/female voice and any of weather/news/traffic and sports updates.
Triple M have been “Rock, Sport, Comedy” for decades, the people who listened in the “Triple your music” days are well outside the target demographics for them nowadays.
I only listen to Triple M’s DAB stations for that very reason - the talk is just too much - but it’s really hard to make the case it’s not what people expect and associate with Triple M, and walking away from that would likely lose listeners.
When you can listen to exactly the music you like, it’s going to be the big name breakfast/drive shows that drive listeners, and sports is the unique edge Triple M has, which is about as advertiser friendly as there is in their demo.
There was only ever really comedy at breakfast eg. Doug Mulray, and sport didn’t start to come into the picture until about a decade ago (in Sydney at least) - I know Melbourne has had AFL since the late 90s.
