For anyone that’s more interested in music, MMM Tradie Radio is worth a listen. I’ve been critical of it before, but have it on most of the time where it’s available now. It just plays music, and a broad range of that from rock to dance to a bit of hip hop, and not just from one era like MMM 90’s did. The playlist can be a little narrow at times, the same songs seem to pop up a lot (they love silverchair), but overall for anyone that wants more music than talk or sport, it’s a really good alternative to the mainline MMM stations.

lol yes and that’s why I questioned the branding at the time… by going with something like Tradie Radio they’ve stereotyped their “typical” listener and alienated half their potential audience before being given a chance. Maybe a better name could have been “Triple M More Music” or something like that

its not an alternative the metro ms they dont play dance and hiphop crap leave that for the hit stations

Spotify and YT Music still aren’t as good as a well curated music playlist from a professional radio programmer in my opinion. I could choose YT Music, but I usually still opt for a station like Rebel FM, Breeze FM, BBC R2 or some community stations. The algorithms for the streaming services just aren’t as good IMO.

I also enjoy some commentary on the music or other non-intrusive comments and news/weather. So radio still holds more appeal than music streaming for that purpose.

However the type of crap they go on with on Triple M is a major turn off. It’s too much talking, too blokey, and too much sport. And worse, the music isn’t right either on the whole. Too safe and repetitive and narrow.

Melbourne’s 105.1 Triple M will host a week-long lunch time special called MG Moments. Hosted by Matty O’Gorman from Triple M’s 2023 ACRA nominated Homegrown with Matty O, the special will replay nationally at 10pm across Triple M’s metro stations and on LiSTNR.

MUSHROOM 50 and Triple M’s MG Moments are now on LiSTNR with the station also be available on Melbourne DAB+.

Doesn’t erase the fact SCA and Mushroom are doing a great effort at painting Gudinski as an angel when really it’s a ‘tool into top bloke after death’ circumstance.

Signs of life at MMM Sydney. CUMES still all over the shop. Disappointment in Drive but up everywhere else. Football finals season up and down the east coast in NSW and VIC might create a bit more audience.
I still can’t quite workout if I like the breakfast show. The banter and chemistry among the whole on-air team is improving, but there’s too much sport…too much boganism (is that a word?)
Can MMM Sydney find a more prominent role for Candace Warner? Good talent used too sparingly.

Triple M Brisbane yet again the main radio broadcaster of tonight’s Brisbane Riverfire fireworks event soundtrack.

No NRL game interruptions this year, so they are able to have the full pre-event show featuring the Rush Hour team (Dobbo, Liam and Leisel Jones) broadcasting live from South Bank with a bunch of listeners in their “Rockstar Lounge”.

It still feels like Triple M is programming to the same listener it was in the 80’s.

Someone who was 40 in 1985 is coming up to their 80th birthday.

They’ve completely missed generational changes. The 30-40 year olds today couldn’t care less about Cheap Wine or the flock of the 80’s shit.

They can see through the forced put on breakfast shows which are essentially grifters for their audiences, not real, yes it’s an entertainment form but be real, not a cartoon character of banter.

You wonder why radio is losing its relevancy

and when the ratings continue to slide, they will blame spotify, or streaming or “people don’t listen to the radio” , instead of doing what they need to do - look in the mirror.

Radio will always have a place - the shared experience, music discovery and news and information. but you need to meet your audience.

It depends what you assume the audience grew up listening to. 20 years ago I listened to Triple M a lot, so the 80s songs that they played a lot of at the time are just as relevant as playing the songs from the early 00s, because I wasn’t just listening to the top 40.

Triple M are more or less targeting people in their 30s-40s who listened to Triple M growing up, while Gold/WS seem to aim for those who were on Fox/2Day, and Smooth for those who were on Mix.

Sure that means Triple M have an ever diminishing pool of potential listeners, but that probably tracks with where rock formatted stations are in general.

Aren’t today’s 30 - 40yos listening to Nova or KIIS?

Agree there’s a need for a younger skewing rock-leaning station but is there really a market for it? Something like XFM in the UK would be good.

But in 1985 it wasn’t really 40yos listening to Triple M, it was 20 - 30yos mostly. I was a 17 year old listening to FM104 and I was discovering a lot of 60s and 70s rock that I’d missed, and loving it.
