But Mix was always the boring station my parents listened to when I was a kid, while PMFM I was the cool station I listened to Badboy Ben and the vixen on…
You’d have to combat that perception as well.

I know, I would love nothing more than for them to revive the PMFM brand. A lot of people (majority of them not in Perth), think the PMFM brand has been gone for far too long to be revived. I don’t think they actually understand how big PMFM was.
I think it would be much easier for them to push 94.5 to Triple M, seeing as how they’re already aligned with the network, but others disagree.
These are the theories though…
Rebrand 92.9 to Triple M, and re-align Mix 94.5 to the Hit Network. This would involve a lot of talent flipping, network show flipping, flipping phone numbers for each station, etc. it could be quite confusing for listeners.
Revive PMFM and align to the new Hit Network branding, and push Mix 94.5 to be 94.5 Triple M.
As mentioned further up, the Triple M Perth Twitter handle was registered in September of this year, so it’s definitely coming. The way it arrives is still yet to be revealed.
I still think it’s easier to rebrand Hit92.9 to Triple M and keep on air changes to mix94.5 at a minimum. All Mix needs to do is switch network shows and studio number. Regular brekkie lineup and workday announcers can remain the same at Mix.
The added bonus is it allows mix94.5 to return to the music format that made it a success rather than it trying too hard to be aligned to the rest of the M’s. And that’ll allow 92.9 to become a pure Triple M station - with the same format as the remaining Triple M network. It’ll eliminate this constant confusion between Mix vs. Triple M branding especially during AFL calls.
Anything that involves moving personalities and programs between 92.9 and 94.5 is going to cause confusion.
The simplest option is for 94.5 to become Triple M and move towards a rock format but keep current programs and personalities, and for 92.9 to revive the 6PM brand, adopt the Sydney/Adelaide music format and keep their current programs and personalities.
It just feels like far too much work to do it any other way - if you change Mix into Triple M, and move 92.9 over to the newer more AC Hit format, then you basically are blowing up two formats at once and needing to promote two new stations to listeners.
Getting those AC listeners who like Mix’s current or recent format will make the switch down to 92.9, and those who want Rock switch from 96fm, while hoping that those who like the current 92.9 format switch to Mix rather than switch to Nova is a lot of work.
Keeping Mix as Mix, and then repositioning it overtime to move it closer to Hit Network format, keeps most of the existing Mix audience in place, leaving the main effort focused on growing the new Triple M.
The dilemma is Triple M is pretty much definitely coming to Perth yet again. And it was mentioned earlier in this forum, that if you tweak with mix94.5 too much it may cause a decline in their pretty decent survey results.
It’s easier to completely mess with 92.9 rather than with 94.5.
But you can’t have both part of the Hit or Triple M network.
This could be proof that Mix 94.5 is set to realign with the Hit Network.
Ok if they are, they have to bring back KYFM then.
I agree with this. I think it could go either way but there is still a real risk that the Mix audience will leave if they truly adopt a Triple M format. I think this is the biggest risk.
You’re right if they launch 94.5 Triple M and 92.9 PMFM it’s launching 2 stations rather than one. Bigger risk of people flicking around and landing on 96 or Nova
Much easier to give Mix a new logo, phone number and network shows rather than an entire new music format.
Especially given they’re a music based station.
Interesting! What does 92.9 play at this time of night? Are they rockier?
I think the same as the other Hit stations. Must be a mistake unless Mix has dropped the Triple M late night talk back.
Can’t see why PMFM can’t be the Triple M equivalent. It’s sort of been done before:

In my opinion, given the West’s approach to COVID-19 with its hard border, you’d have to have rocks in your head (as well as on your playlist) to launch Triple M in Perth. Make them feel special and give them a local brand. If SCA are worried about the cost efficiencies of having Perth as a different brand, such as PMFM, from the rest of WA, the smart answer is to restore the RadioWest brand name and use it across the state including Perth.
It sounds like they are thinking of taking Triple M into Perth again.
When I look at the ratings, it is Triple M in Sydney that should consider adopting the mix format and branding.
SCA are obsessed with the Hit and Triple M network, both of which struggle for relevance in Sydney.
Mind you, after destroying so many local and regional brands I suppose Hit and MMM are now all they have left.
Terrible idea IMO.
The Triple M brand has been tried and failed in the Perth market at least twice (first by 96FM in the 90s, then more recently as a DAB+ only offering), so what makes SCA think it isn’t likely to crash and burn again on 92.9?
If SCA decided to use “Mix” as a station name in the Sydney market, I suspect they’d quickly hear a word or two from ARN’s legal department!
ARN does not own a trademark for Mix.
Back when PMFM still existed, they used to broadcast the footy and had a rockier playlist. I can’t see them reviving RadioWest or WAFM.
That old 3MMM ad is voiced brilliantly. Ballsy 90’s rock radio as it should be.
I wish they’d use a similar style voice today.
Hmmm, I just had a look at 92.9’s logs for the same times and they’re identical. Surely this is an error on the website’s part…
This morning’s log on 94.5 was back to their normal playlist.
I quite like the current Mix FM logo, I would hope they keep it even if they did switch networks, maybe make it green? Like they made it orange to fit in with Triple M.
