triple j

Yeah it’s been a fantastic event. And who’d have thought you’d get millenials living in the age of Spotify wanting to request songs on the radio.

Full credit to the Js for playing the stuff that doesn’t fit their ‘brand’ either - while I wouldn’t normally celebrate hearing ‘Rock DJ’ on the national youth broadcaster (or anywhere for that matter) it and the other examples above really make this week so interesting

I’d like them to take some hints and broaden Double J after this week.

Agree 100%! Been an awesome week to listen to. Love how they’ve made it a real feature. I’d say it’s been pretty successful in terms of being embraced by the audience.

May it continue as a programming event for the future

Definitely a bit of a shift happening - go back a decade or two and this simply wouldn’t have happened without extenuating circumstances (e.g. Zan Rowe’s Take 5) during something like Requestival.

The fact that they allowed Adele in the Hottest 100 of the decade was a glaring hint that any further special events would provide a special exception for the most mainstream of the mainstream. Not at all a bad thing though! (though I’m sure some will be having a fit).

It has finally happened, Triple J just played Taylor Swift Shake it off!!!

It was the most requested song this afternoon on requestival.

There have been a few angry texts from hardcore Triple J listeners asking Triple J to go back to music communism.

BTW the music on Triple J this week has been excellent I have not switched stations all week.
Might be an idea for Nova or Kiis to drop their horrible workday playlists and allow the listeners to have total control. We can only dream!!!

Yep, exactly what I was thinking too. With the interest this has generated, surely Nova or someone should do something similar. Just mix it up a bit!

Nova did kinda try this last year with their Friday Feels by request with Smallyz. It was so fake. You ring up with a request they put you to air and then they would get you to request the next song on their playlist, not what you wanted to hear.

What made Triple J requestival so good is they played everything from TAY TAY to Beethoven it is quite wack.

Exactly.

Wouldn’t work on a commercial station at risk of driving people away and therefore advertisers.

It worked on Triple J as they have a bit more programming and musical freedom.

2day fm in the mid 90’s had at work network requests. I was at high school then so never rang up to request a song. I assume it would not have been them playing what ever you wanted.

That sort of thing always sounds bad, a Middle aged guy from sales requesting Salt n Peppa.

The couple of requests I was involved in gave you a bit of musical freedom, as long as it was generally within the station’s playlist.

As a brief anecdote (not really related to Triple J sorry), my mother once tried to request Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Relax’ on Bay FM Geelong (yeah I don’t know why she wanted to hear that either) but they told her it was too risque and wouldn’t play it (this was probably 20 years ago now when Bay FM had an older more conservative vibe). They did however play her other request, which was definitely her choice and not a pre-selected track, Babushka by Kate Bush.

And yes, why I remember the specific details of these irrelevant anecdotes from my childhood beats me too…

Nova 106.9 did this a couple of years ago with “Facebook Friday” a few times where they got people to request songs via their facebook page. They’d make a new post every hour to build the following hour’s playlist. Was pretty funny because a few times they read out some details from the requester’s facebook profile or something like that.

Loved that they played KK Slider today too haha

One of my favourite moments so far! I didn’t realise how much I knew the words until it started.

Yet another example of why the past week has been so great:

Just a quick note on Adele. She was discovered & signed by XL Recordings who were an established indie. Beck, The Prodigy, Radiohead & The Horrors were all signed by owner Richard Russell & then went on to be big. Richard I think gave her a call & signed over the phone, dunno if that was just an urban myth. So technically she wasn’t a “commercial” artist as such back then but went onto be
