Do we have anyone here that likes looking at flight trackers?

I like putting in the flight number and seeing the variations of the actual flight path in recent days (which is impacted by weather and other things) and seeing how much of a delay there is between estimated/actual departure and arrival times.

This site is a good one.

Yessss I do this. Mostly with Flightrader on my iPhone. We live under the Melb flight path, so im forever looking up whats flying overhead.

And anyone of my family or friends get a video of their take off and landing when they fly HAHAHA

Flightradar can be handy for FM DX purposes as well, if you know where aircraft are likely to reflect certain signals. For example, an aircraft flying at high altitude over the Riverina will likely reflect signals from Griffith and/or Swan Hill into Bungendore.

I might run my own

Oh might you?

Oh do tell… or is it like how some members on here are getting TV feeds etc. that they perhaps shouldn’t be getting?

Not really - sites like FlightAware rely on installations like I have to populate their services. Its not something I talk a lot about, I need to maintain a reasonable level of nerd

It’s not hard to get a site setup (although getting a Raspberry Pi for a reasonable price is hard so it becomes a little expensive) - they even give you a good set of instructions to get started:

I find it interesting to watch the news/traffic helicopter.

Use it when flights look as though they’re delayed to try to figure out where the plane is, assuming it’s in transit.

Currently in WA, I loved being able to watch the sunset over the ocean! Photo below taken at North Beach in Perth. Weather has been good so far too! Even though today is supposed to be wet, but should pass over quickly.

Great pic ,we don’t see the sun set over the ocean on the East Coast

Although not technically over the ocean, a similar vista could be had on the west side of North Stradbroke Island or Moreton Island.

A little harder for us Roaches due to the lack of near shore islands! Montague Island is the only one…though you can only get out there on a tour.

A really high cherry picker maybe?

Cut NSW off with a hacksaw like we wanted to do to VIC in 2020 when COVID was running rife causing people to sneak across the border giving us the heebees?

I think the rest of the country probably would have paid good money to return the favour to us NSWers back in 2021 too though lol

I guess if you were to build a big enough dam on the Murray somewhere near Mildura you’d end up with a decent enough sized lake to at least emulate that feeling of the sun setting over the ocean.

When I read that I could only think of Victoria largest salt lake, Lake Tyrell which is about 200km south of Mildura.

Cape Liptrap would be the best option in VIC (have a look at a map; there’s plenty of ocean to the west due to the ‘Gulf of Melbourne’). Also the western parts of Wilson’s Prom, though they are a bit less accessible.
