Intersting that the newest longest flight in the world. Singapore to New York. It was Doha to Auckland. Not sure i could do it. For me 16 and a half hours from Vancouver to Melbourne was brutal enough for me

Yeah I prefer more stop overs personally. I had the option of flying direct to the US this time but decided on one that gave me a stop over. I just need the time to stretch my legs and walk on land for a bit.

SIN to JFK has been the longest (18 hours) for a while now. I was intrigued to learn that the flight path for this route goes up near the Arctic Circle, not via the Pacific Ocean.

This should change in 2026 when SYD to both LHR and JFK are up and running (20 hours non stop).

And I’ll be torturing myself with a 17 hour non stop leg from DFW to SYD in March next year!

ABC News online reports:

EY administrator Sam Freeman just spoke to ABC News Radio’s Tom Melville about the deal. Mr Freeman says the federal government’s backing is great news for regional Australia.

“It provides an opportunity for the administrators to implement a business improvement plan to position the business for sale, which will include increasing the size of the fleet and the regional capacity,” Mr Freeman told ABC News Radio.

He said the deal will also see former Rex workers made redundant able to be paid their eligible entitlements through either payments from the administrator, or through access to the federal government’s Fair Entitlements Guarantee scheme (which allows employees can claim certain entitlements that their employer can’t pay).

Brisbane to US prices slashed as airline war heats up

An all-out price war has exploded after two airlines announced they would now fly from Brisbane to the US, with Queenslanders set to be the big winners.

American Airlines has just started direct flights from Brisbane to Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas, while next month sees the introduction of flights to Los Angeles from rival carrier Delta.

With United Airlines, Air Canada and Qantas already operating Brisbane-US routes, Delta’s arrival will take the total to five – and travellers are set to be the major winners with some of the cheapest international flights in years.

Delta has just dropped a sale for Brisbane-Los Angeles (return) flights for as low as $867 – less than half the price offered by other carriers over the past two years.

Similar moves have also been made by competitors with travellers able to fly the same journey for less than $1000.

By comparison, Qantas is offering return fares to LA over the coming months from $1904.

That may even encourage Melbourne people to fly via Brisbane, if they can tolerate a 5-minute ride between the terminals on top of the mandated minimum transfer time of 90 minutes from a domestic flight to an international flight.

(Qantas operates direct flights between Melbourne and Los Angeles, and between Melbourne and Dallas-Fort Worth)

I’m sure anyone can tolerate 5 minutes to save hundreds of dollars.

The saving mightn’t be as much as some think when you have to add in the price of a MEL-BNE flight (which isn’t always cheap) and you might also need to factor in staying the night before in BNE too depending on what time your US flight leaves BNE.

Considering I saw direct flights to the US with united from Melbourne for $1020 return I don’t think saving $100 is really worth it.

It’s time for Sydney Airport to eliminate the 11pm curfew and step into the 21st century. It seems absurd that Australia’s main international airport still has such restrictions.

Last night, my late flight was cancelled due to storms in the area, compounded by the curfew. We were originally scheduled to depart at 9:30 PM, then pushed to 10:30 PM, and further delayed to 10:50 PM. While sitting in the lounge, we were called for boarding, only to have the flight cancelled right as we reached the gate.

At the service desk waiting to be rebooked, airline staff made an announcement over the PA system informing us it was time to leave the airport since it was 11 PM, there were no further flights, and the terminals were closing—essentially kicking us out.

I managed to get on the first flight this morning, but not before spending $300 on a hotel for just four hours of sleep.

Tasmanian Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, has announced that they’ve been in discussions with Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines to get direct flights from Hobart to Asia once runway upgrades are completed next year.
We’ve had some Cathay Pacific freight flights a few years ago over the Summer months but we haven’t had passenger flights and at the moment the only international ones are Air New Zealand flights to Auckland 3 times a week from October to March.
