Tokyo Olympics Coverage

Seeing multiple teams going into quarantine upon arrival in Japan because one of their entourage tested positive for COVID-19, I’m a bit surprised every team didn’t schedule their arrival 14+ days before the games start.

For some reason, Giaan Rooney now won’t be involved with Seven’s coverage (even though she was announced as part of the team a few months ago). Instead, it seems Leisel Jones will be taking her place.

Also, the presenters for 7mate’s coverage will be Emma Freedman (as stated in the press release TV Cynic dreamed about posted), Trent Copeland (putting 2 & 2 together considering everything we know) and Chris Stubbs (previously confirmed)

Some strange decisions this year.

Giaan was recently on Nine, think on Sports Sunday live-cross. Maybe she couldn’t do both Amazon Prime’s Swimming and Seven’s Olympics? She went back at least 10 years.

Rachel Finch? Also went back at least 10 years.

Kylie Gillies (who was at Rio and goes back to at least Sydney 2000)? Sam Lane (popular cycling on the ground reporter in Rio and Gold Coast IIRC)? Neil Kearney (who goes back to at least Atlanta 1996 I think)? Mark Readings? Michael Zappone? (Who I think both hosted a m/c at Rio).

And Rio 2016 had three full time channels (7, 7Two and 7mate were used late afternoon all the way through the night until midday every day) - took a different direction this year. Maybe television environment having plummeted since then? Or to increase 7Plus push?

This Olympics vs Rio has also lost: Jim Wilson, Todd Woodbridge, Michael Felgate, probably missing some more.

And WTF is with Mel McLaughlin, been buried, now just a reporter on the ground? Maybe she’ll be focusing on Seven News Sydney sport.

No David Christison for hockey? He was mentioned in the 2020 press release, but not here.

Maybe he’ll be on world feed?

There’s a fair few people who have decided being away from their families for five weeks (1 week prior to games start, 2 Weeks of games then 2 weeks hotel quarantine on return) or so is not for them and that’s entirely understandable.

Strange they’re using a backdrop of the Sakura Cherry Blossom, but that season has well and truly passed here in Japan.

The Sunrise deliberate mistake.

I so want these games to be a success but they have not even started and it is just a shitshow with all these people being positive to covid.

Ugh Baz’s doing Swimming. I hope Ian and Leisel can take control of most of the coverage when he’s commentating (I was hoping when he was made Lord Mayor, we would be saved his commentating at the Olympics, but alas I didn’t get that lucky).

No mention of Brisbane 2032 bid on Seven. Would be an absolute shame if we couldn’t watch
