Today Tonight

Speaking of the ratings, how long do we think Seven (and I guess also Nine) will continue to split the numbers into half hour portions on weeknights after next week?

Big mistake in my opinion.

Monika Kos probably to afternoon news. If not 9 will probably poach her, axe Michael Thompson to reign the loyal TT viewers to 9.

The Latest at 7pm nationally in 2020?

If they pump resources into The Latest it would be good they can’t just have 6pm news and Sunrise. They need more than that or they’re no better than 10

Though Seven also has an early news and 4:00pm news, and news during the morning and afternoon infomercial shows.

The ‘revelation’ from McPherson is that it is never coming back.

Seven, not that committed to news.

Could be a great promo perhaps?

He said this ages ago. There were no plans to revive it. . So it’s old news.

Mixed feelings on the end of TT brand. On one hand the Adelaide and Perth editions have dominated their timeslot for so long they will be able to go out on top, on the other it gives A Current Affair and The Project a free kick.
Why will a major network like Seven want to get out of current affairs? I hope there will be a new show of this genre in 2020.

… Wow. Just, wow. :open_mouth:.

Hopefully this decision hasn’t been rushed and those who work on TT in SA and WA have an opportunity to say goodbye and/or produce something special as a final farewell. The show has been around for more than two decades. I can’t speak for Perth, but at least in Adelaide, TT I think still is respected by a good chunk of the viewers, especially compared to the east coast version.

It was only in 2017 and 2018 that two of TT Adelaide’s founding producers resigned (Frank Pangallo and Graham Archer, pictured below). Continuing the pattern, now 2019 will be the year that the programme itself departs from 7’s screens.

I’ll just leave this here (there are a few snippets from TT promos mixed in)

Peter Ford is reporting that Monika won’t be with the network after the curtain falls on Friday.

Will be interesting to see if she is “snapped up” watch this space…

While there may be a place in Seven’s lineup for a nightly (or weekly - but that’s for another thread) current affairs program again in the future, with all the scandals associated with East Coast versions of the program it’s probably for the best that the Today Tonight brand remains left to history IMO.

As for the reports that Monika Kos’ association with Seven Perth will end when TT does, very interesting! Surely Nine would be trying to pick up her services?

This puts to bed the current affairs genre on 7 after the axing of Sunday Night with its last episode on Sunday drawing just under 350,000 viewers

Not surprised. Cost cutting is clearly evident at SWM, and I get the expectation that Flashpoint may have received TTs budget (at least in Perth). The other reality is how much are they paying to keep Sue/Rick & Jane/John at the network long term… surely what they pay these duos would equal or potentially exceed what they pay solo presenters in Melbourne and Sydney.
