How can Steve say he couldn’t commit to the travelling aspect of the role due to his daughters, which is a perfectly understandable comment, then say he was blindsided by the announcement?
By saying you can’t commit to the terms of the role, you effectively resigned from said role.
What?? You’ve gotten it totally back-to-front. They wanted him back on the road for weather next year but he couldn’t commit to that every week for personal reasons (and they know that, and were willing and wanting to compensate this year). He was blindsided in that he didn’t think after 15 years on weather he would be axed from the network and from a role that they begged him to return to.
They wanted him to return. He couldn’t commit to the role for family reasons, therefore stepping down from the role or resigning, however you want to put it.
An employer isn’t obliged to redeploy you if they don’t want to.
He didn’t want to be weatherman on Today anymore so his employment ended. He shouldn’t be feeling blindsided about anything.
If I resign from my job, I certainly don’t just assume that I’ll get another role in the company.
Could you imagine the uproar if Nine consistently failed to accommodate the needs of female talent with regard to family situations? First Chris Smith and now Steve Jacobs out of work because they put the needs of their children ahead of a position that demands them to work family unfriendly hours.
The format with him in studio failed. Just like when David Brown was in studio for Sunrise. It didn’t work so they found someone who could be on the road.
That’s what’s changed.
They clearly want someone back on the road and Steve can’t do it. Therefore, he chose to leave the role.
He didn’t say that. He was asked to come back to the weather to add fun but also familarity to the team. Nine wanted him on the desk alongside Georgie and Deb, for those reasons. This suited Stevie because he couldn’t commit to the travel. Both parties wanted it this way.
Next year, they changed the terms of the contract and wanted him out on the road because having him in studio wasn’t responding with the viewers. Since, they knew he couldn’t do this, he was sacked. Steve is very popular with the viewers, as seen in the social media comments. Part of the blindside comment is that they said no one would be leaving the network in this sweep out, that wasn’t the case. It was in Nine’s best interest to accomodate him.
The show had bigger problems than whether or not the weather was presented in studio or on the road. He was about the only one bringing the laughs and displaying some personality yet he loses his job while the talent that couldn’t make it work get redeployed. Sounds fair.
Is it weird that Burlo put Alex Cullen really early on the ‘Today Show’. Before taking his sport role, surely Cullen would finish tomorrow?. And Jono Uptin will be hosting on Monday with Lara
Hope this thread is OK
Back in the day, how did Karl come about? I know Liebo had a heart attack at the end of 2004, and I presume Karl would’ve filled in, and anchored coverage of the Boxing Day Tsunami. Like with Fargo, he would’ve raised some eyebrows.
Did he fill in beforehand?
Thanks!
