Tony Jones is back presenting sport today from Melbourne, with the rest of the team in Darwin. This is just the 4th time they have had a sports presenter… in 4 weeks (despite TJ still doing 6pm).
It was made into a joke that he wasn’t invited to wedding he said l’m the old uncle who didn’t get an invitation.
Just watching the show this morning and it’s not as bad as it’s made out to be.
There are a few things I’d change though:
Tom is wasted in the news reading role. He really needs to join Georgie and Deb as the third co-host. This was proven when he hosted when the ladies were on leave last month. He’s a talent that has the potential to be the next Karl (ie long standing).
8:30am weather for example. Tom is great. Stevie was going on and on about the baby’s name and Tom literally carried him off set. It’s great! Fun!
The content and appearance is what let’s it down. Odd looking graphics, the set is looking a bit old and the layout of stories needs dramatic improvement.
I think keep Steve in the studio. He’s brings fun and laughs. However, they do need someone on the road meeting and interacting with the people so I would have Lara Vella on the road doing giveaways and interacting with people.
The sports reader role either needs to go completely or have someone permanent in studio. This is very very messy at the moment. For example, no sport was read at the 8am block this morning.
Like I said, the show really isn’t as bad as it looks. The team isn’t the problem, except for bumping up Tom and the 3 of them can share the news reading.
Today’s NT wedding episode saw ratings sub 200k again with Sunrise 80,000 ahead. I doubt anyone is surprised!
Tom really struggled with the technical difficulties (on 2 occasions) during the 5.30am news this morning. It was unwatchable and I switched straight over to Nat.
What are they gonna do next
‘Are you breathing?’
Georgie’s pose next to Dickie is a bit interesting… looks like she’s sitting on his lap
Surely there are better ways to interact with the audience than this “same name” garbage. I know taking the show out of the studio thing hasn’t resulted in a bump in ratings but they do need to get some of the talent out and about to meet the audience.
If I were them I’d be investigating the possibility of renting a food van and putting on a breakfast in a different location every now and then. Call it the “Today Cafe”. Have it sponsored by the Coffee Club, Gloria Jeans or McCafe and take it to a featured location with the hosts to serve coffee and bacon and eggs to viewers who come down and meet the team. It’d be a good opportunity to highlight unique community initiatives and meet quirky individuals and people making a difference in the areas they visit.
I absolutely love this idea.
Well they did The Today Jeeps when there was Karl, Lisa, Georgie, Fordo, Stevie & Dickie In 2013. I believe
Stevie did something like this yesterday- giving away Subways and coffee to commuters.

Some tributes for Rob Penfold on his retirement from Nine News Bureau after 43 years.
Hope I am in the right thread
I am curious on some elements of Today’s history.
When did Today move to 6am, and did they move back to 7am and then moved back to 6am.
From what I can find on YouTube, the show was at 6am by mid ‘04:
However did Today how move back to 7am to make way for a National Nine Early News bulletin? I am basing this assumption off this video from the 9/11 anniversary in ‘06:
Which makes me confused, because Jess’ first show in ‘06 was from 6am:
And Lisa’s second show in ‘07 was from 6am (includes the infamous WIN coverup )
Can someone can shed some light, as I can’t find any info on Wikipedia or anywhere else on the Internet (presumably because all the attention was on Sunrise at the time). I was in nappies at the time. Thanks!
Absolutely love that set! Something like this combined with Channel 10s Living Room Set would be awesome and would work well
Absolutely, would be fantastic nowadays!!
Leaps and bounds over the current set, and every one since they replaced it!!
Back in 2005 (beginning) Leila McKinnon replaced Sharyn Ghidella as Today newsreader. Sharyn moved to new 6am news bulletin with Chris Smith, Today followed at 7am.
A few months later, the 6am bulletin was gone and Sharyn got her old job back. Leila went back to being a fill in.
