Today (2015-Sept 2020)

If Weekend Today is coming from the small studio then they’ve had plenty of time to redo the bigger one over summer with no shows being filmed in there.

Not a bad prediction here, if I say so myself.

I feel like with all the movements they’ve made that they’ve actually strengthened all programs. Georgie to Today, Deb to News, Allison/ Peter to the ever struggling Weekend Today and Tom to 60 Minutes with a well established team with Tara, Liz, Charles and Ross. I think each program has come out of this pretty well. So a blessing Lisa left? Lol

I agree wholeheartedly. The only thing I would say is that whilst Deb is great for weekend news, I think Georgie was a much stronger back up and potential replacement for Peter Overton if he ever moved on.

I agree about Deb but they had to put her somewhere. Friday and Saturday nights are suitable for her however I don’t think she’s the intended Overton replacement. Firstly, I see Overton staying, as long as ratings are strong, for at least another 20 or so years. A replacement for Pete could potentially still be in primary school right now!

Apologies if the question has been asked before, but I’m personally more interested to know what people think a Georgie & Karl-fronted Today will do in the ratings?

I think Today in 2018 will be a huge hit in Sydney, get a relatively lukewarm response in Melbourne & Brisbane while Adelaide & Perth will probably keep on watching Sunrise as usual.

The “Georgie & Karl” promos have a different look to the general promotional style of Today in 2017, so that’s probably why people are wondering whether the program will get a refresh.

But of course, there’s been many instances in the past where promo graphics have not lead to full relaunches. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

The national news/current affairs programs have been strengthened, but it’s a sideways move for Nine News Sydney. Deborah Knight becoming the new 2nd in-line newsreader after Peter Overton certainly won’t hurt the ratings (when she filled in on Sunday-Thursday for that week around July last year, Deb smashed Seven in the ratings IIRC), but it’s not as if the move was absolutely necessary for the success of Nine’s Sydney 6pm bulletin.

My honest opinion on the ratings situation: I think the same thing that’ll happen with The Project, will happen to Today. The person, so Lisa for TP, and Georgie for Today, will strengthen the program and the product will be better as a result, however, I do think the ratings for both shows will remain relatively unchanged. So basically a win for viewers not so much the networks.

Georgie returning is great but the show didn’t need any line-up changes, IMO.Particularly, that Lisa was a great host.

Whilst we are aware that there will be format, unfortunately, I wouldn’t be surprised if Today kept their horrid set and graphics for the next few years.

Nonetheless, there is enough reason to at least revamp.

You’ve moved my words around. My point was Lisa leaving was the catalyst in the massive switch around which ended up with all of the news and current affairs programs under the Nine News banner becoming strong and consistent. I think Weekend Today will be the one to benefit the most out of all of this.

Anything that keeps ratings steady is a win for the network in this day and age.

They have had a far worse set in recent memory…

It was reported in a News Corp paper. That’s not a reliable source?

That was the worst set in history.

It literally did not have a single redeeming feature (though I’m struggling to think of any on the current set either).

The fire in around 2011??

Brenton Ragless is co-hosting with Sylvia again this week.

Yeah, but one could argue that Today isn’t any stronger as Lisa was a very capable host. Deborah Knight leaving Today is, also, a shame.

Though, I do agree that Allison and Pete joining Weekend Today are changes for the better.

I actually prefer that set to the current striped panels.

No one has actually said that Allison is joining, it was only reported as rumours.

Natalia Cooper is back presenting the weather and Richard Wilkins is also back from holidays today.

Not surprising considering it is when most guests/regulars have time off and go on holidays etc.

NEW LOOK WEEKEND TODAY

ALLISON LANGDON AND PETER STEFANOVIC TO CO-HOST

Respected journalists Allison Langdon and Peter Stefanovic will co-host Weekend TODAY with Jayne Azzopardi presenting news, it was announced today.

The pair – who are regular faces on 60 Minutes – will wake up with viewers every Saturday and Sunday from January 20. Allison will combine co-hosting Weekend TODAY with her 60 Minutes role as a reporter, while Peter will join the Nine News Sydney team after a very successful and busy year at 60 Minutes. He will also contribute stories to 60 Minutes where possible.

Tom Steinfort, who has been co-hosting Weekend TODAY since early 2017, has begun a fulltime reporting role on 60 Minutes.

Allison Langdon said: “I’m really excited to be joining the Weekend Today team. Pete is a great mate and has been for many years. We both take our journalism very seriously but not ourselves. We have a lot of laughs together and I look forward to sharing that with our Today audience alongside Jayne, who is one of the best and hardest working journalists in the country.

This opportunity is a wonderful fit with my 60 Minutes commitments and allows me to travel less and spend more time with my beautiful little boy Mack. I can’t wait for the year ahead."

Peter Stefanovic said: “To be asked back to co-host Weekend Today is a privilege, and it definitely feels like I’m returning home. I’ve known Ally for more than ten years. She’s a great journalist, smart and funny, and I look forward to working alongside her and Jayne. She’s a perfect addition to the Weekend Today show squad!”

Nine Network Director of News, Darren Wick, said: “What a team to wake up with every weekend. The dynamics and professionalism of Ally, Pete and Jayne guarantees a relaxed and warm start to your weekend, and I couldn’t be happier. I want to thank Tom Steinfort for his wonderful work on Weekend Today and congratulate him on his new role at 60 Minutes.”
