Tipping Point

I understand your points on the importance of the success of the show for Nine. Hot Seat has struggled for a number of years against The Chase and this did impact the ratings of the news. Tipping Point is them taking a chance on a new format that has shown promise in its early afternoon timeslot.

But you also have to remember that the four tennis majors are one of the pillars of Nine’s sports strategy, in addition to the NRL and now the Olympics. If both Nine and Todd didn’t believe that he could meet the pressure in addition to the tennis, they would have looked at other options.

While Nine News continues to perform strongly in its two league markets (Sydney and Brisbane), in the former city it hasn’t had a clean sweep year since 2014 or 2015 (the latter year being when The Chase Australia debuted on Seven), and in 2020 it was denied a clean sweep in the final week of that year’s ratings.

This year, in Sydney it won 28 out of 40 ratings weeks, its worst result since 2011 (26/40) when they reclaimed the news ratings crown from Seven News which came shortly after the late Ian Ross retired from newsreading in 2009.

If they have 100 episodes filmed, that’s about 20 weeks worth (or 5 months), so realistically gets them to about mid June. Olympic start end of July.

Good start. Pace is right.

I’d be worried if I were The Chase. A very easy to watch show and Todd is doing a great job and is likeable.

Not a fan of the different music, but enjoying it so far. It wouldn’t turn me off watching it.

Also the bottom shelf of the machine needs to be lit in red and not white, because it make the silver coloured counters harder to see.

Todd is really good. Great choice, glad they didn’t stick with Eddie

Very smart to launch it tonight I reckon. Hope it works for them next year. Seven and The Chase should be worried. Will really be relying on Adelaide and Perth (though the UK version does well in those markets, often outrating Hot Seat).

Agree, mostly good… They’ve edited out the slow bits like when the shelf is just sliding back and forth that you see in the UK one.

I like that the local version has a different colour machine and its own graphics, but would have liked to see a local opener.

Todd is also proving to be a good host.

Enjoying it so far. Instead of taking an ad break in the middle of the first round as is the case when Nine televises the UK show, a break now takes place in the middle of the third round, with the first two rounds played uninterrupted. A break also takes place during the final round, but is utilized before Todd reveals the answer to a question.

Todd is proving to be a capable game show host so far.

I’m not sure what to think of the audience participation.

Ooh only five questions in the Jackpot round here (UK version has 6 questions).

So will make it harder to win here.

SUPER boring

Yeah, i prefer Hot Seat still.

There’s not as much banter on this show, that was a good thing about that despite Eddie’s “jokes”.

They’ve changed the end game as well.

It’s really good. All the family loving it.

The major format differences in the Australian version compared to the UK version:

  • Only 2 prize counters compared to three

  • No penalty pot in Round 1 - counters are simply removed from the game.

  • Only 30 seconds on the clock in Round 2 - the UK version has had a 45 second clock under the three contestant format.

  • Each contestant only gets two questions in Round 3

  • Only 5 categories in the Jackpot round instead of 6

  • The Jackpot Temptation - you can either play:
    3 counters for $20,000
    2 counters for $20,000 + holiday
    1 counter for $40,000

Also: counters are worth $100 instead of £50.

Though not mentioned, it is possible to win $40,000 (or $80,000 if both double counters are dropped in conjunction with the jackpot counter) if the jackpot counter goes with the double, though I also have no idea if that rule is in play.

Tonight was very ‘surgical’, straight down the line. Whether that changes as Todd becomes settled into the hosting role and the show’s format will be interesting to see.

Thought he did a decent job without being spectacular or doing anything noteworthy.

I think TP may get a ratings boost compared to HS initially out of interest, but long term it won’t challenge The Chase.
It doesn’t particularly grab you, and after a while I think Todd’s voice will get annoying. He’s not game show host material.

There are also mystery prizes such as appliances.
