Agree with you that doing hyperlocal stories is a waste of time as your viewership wouldn’t be after that stuff.
A watched the 1pm bulletin this afternoon. How many reporters do you have currently have in Australia? I noticed you now have two in Melbourne based reporters and I’m assuming one still based in Sydney?
Also, well done on removing the chairs. Looks much better.
Would have been cool if Ticker focused on the Asia Pacific region given their editorial content on tech, aviation, etc. Asia, but in particular Southeast Asia, India, Japan and Korea are hugely interested in this kind of thing and their younger audiences are streaming natives - many have never had a TV.
English is the common business language and it would be so cheap to maintain staff in Bangkok, Jakarta, etc.
I get they have a reporter and anchor from Singapore but there’s still a huge US focus and looks like they’re expansion plans are in North America and Europe rather than Tokyo, Seoul, KL, etc. would have really positioned Ticker as something unique.
I was getting that feeling, that staff turnover might be high with a start up venture like this.
Seems to be a good training ground for some.
We have two reporters in Australia, both based in Melbourne. We don’t want to be over-represented in Australia when we’re talking to global distribution platforms.
And yeh thanks for the constructive feedback. It was an easy thing to do! Still waiting for this new camera to arrive (currently sitting in a “Melbourne depot” - once we get it we’ll prob lose the desk and have our anchors standing.
We cover a lot of Asia, including the typhoon this week, always covering China. I guess the thing with news channels is you have to watch for a very long time to see everything!
Yeh we had a reporter in Sydney for a while, but we realised that if we went down the path of reporters in every city, then we are Sky News/ABC News. What would be truly unique would be to cover the world from an Australian perspective. And all the platforms we talk to are international, so it made sense. Youtube/Facebook/Amazon etc aren’t Australian companies.
We haven’t had huge staff turnover compared to other places I’ve worked. When we first started, a lot of people saw us as an opportunity, but they weren’t journalists. And shows like Jumpstart made that really apparent. Also a lot of the non-news shows were designed to be 3 months commitments. Then the pandemic changed that business model.
Since the start of this year we only hire journalists.
One of the greatest things about being a startup is you get to try things and see what happens. There’s been so much criticism about Australian TV my whole life that no one ever tries anything new. For me, we’ve got nothing to lose!
But we’ve really found our niche, and now we have a solid foundation to build on. And a great side-effect of that is Ticker is a great place to work.
@Ahron My feedback for the brief bit I watched before
Its hard to see in my cap but the website player’s watermark hangs over you logo on the left hand side.
Sorry Im a bit confused? Where are you watching this? I’ve gone to our website and can’t see a watermark…
It’s definitely there:
Was a plugin that needed an update. All sorted.
@Ahron How will these segments be directed editorially since your intention is to cover both weather and climate in them? Curious about content.
So William won’t be reading out numbers. The way it works is he will appear on camera and present the stories about the major weather events happening in the world, and the days top climate news - thanks to our content partnership with Reuters.
Then once he’s done that, he’ll throw to the live weather figures from cities around the world. Whole segment will run 2-3 mins and go out each hour of our broadcasting schedule.
We’ll be announcing more segments next week.
Would be neat if Ticker could report on air quality forecasts too as part of the daily rundown. It’s super common OS and it’s nuts local broadcasters haven’t picked it up here, especially during fires, etc.
Looks quite good, nice to not see red for breaking news. I like the vertical screen too, very nice.
The height different between desks is unusual though and doesn’t quite work imo. The impression I get from that is that it looks almost courtroom like, like the superiority of someone sitting above others looking down.
I also think they could do away with the Ticker logo on the RHS, it’s too much. The Live bug could be stacked on top of the Ticker News on the left which would really refine the graphics a bit and remove some of the bulkiness.
If I was nitpicking I’d also increase the weight of the font on the ticker as it’s quite thin, and drop it down one size to fit nicer but realise it’s probably designed that way for viewing on mobile devices.
Agree with this - the thin fonts on both the ticker and the right hand side box is far too thin (conversely, I think the LIVE text bottom right is too thick. No pleasing some people.)
Is it just me or is the lighting way too dark
