On a fairly low rating night, Seven had its first overnight win of the week with a 0.6 victory over Nine in network shares though Nine’s main channel was ahead of Seven’s by 2 points. With no MAFS or BBL from the previous Thursday, public broadcasters ABC and SBS were the biggest improvers, ABC up 2 and SBS up 1.

Seven News got the night underway but it was the bulletin’s lowest audience for any night of 2023 including the lowest rated bulletin for Seven in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Triple Home and away followed with the late episode the lowest rated of the year. Later, Red Faces was back for another repeat.

Nine’s News was much more competitive though its ratings were lower than the previous Thursday. RBT and a repeat of Paramedics followed ACA that had another win at 7pm. Looks like the second week back will also be a winner across the week in its timeslot.

Despite the network’s improved share, ABC line up was down week-on-week with 7.30 below 400k.

The second episode of Taskmaster Australia held on to 305,000 of the launch episode’s 360,000 rating, landing fourth at 7.30 though winning all key demos. 10 News and The Project also in the top 20.

Good number for cricket on Foxtel.

Taskmaster’s audience slipped from last week even without MAFS against it.

From Nine:

  • The 9Network wins Thursday night with all key demographics and Channel 9 wins Thursday night as No.1 primary channel across all key demographics and Total People.
  • RBT wins timeslot across the 5 City and East Coast and in Sydney with Total People and GS + Child.
  • ACA wins 7pm timeslot across the 5 City and East Coast and in Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide with Total People.
  • ACA recorded a Live BVOD Audience of 34,000 (+31% YoY)
  • 9News ranks No. 1 program with Total People across the East Coast and in Sydney and Brisbane.
  • Nine takes out the top 2 programs live streamed and top 2 program streamed on catch up yesterday against all broadcasters
  • Today wins breakfast slot in across the East Coast and in Sydney and Brisbane with Total People.

From 10:

Network 10 (10 + 10 Bold + 10 Peach + 10 Shake):

  • #2 network in under 50s and 16 to 39s.
  • 10: #2 channel in under 50s and 16 to 39s.
  • 10 Peach: #1 multi-channel in its key demo of 16 to 39s.

Taskmaster Australia:

  • #1 show in under 50s and 16 to 39s.
  • #1 entertainment show in 25 to 54s.
  • #1 in its timeslot in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s .

Another reason why Ten or Nine could bid for them. Nothing is stopping them getting series from overseas tours that fall at the right time of day for Australia.

Interesting how the landscape changes once MAFS is taken out of the equation.

Seven should consider using Thursday for live Idol and dominate the night withouth the stronger competition

I think the cricket would’ve taken a lot of people away from the FTA’s last night.

That cricket rating is national though, so when you take away even a portion of that, doesn’t really seem that high for a nationally-appealing major sport

Yeah its hard to know what % of it is national and regional but it is a good number for a pay tv audience

You make a fair point and of course it’s a good STV figure, however major codes that don’t have national appeal like AFL and NRL, if they sometimes get (e.g.) 300k (and I reckon even far more on Kayo), then that should be the bare minimum for major sports with national-appeal (olympics, comm games, prominent test cricket, Australian Open tennis) on Foxtel. Yes I’m aware that Foxtel don’t have rights to 3 of those, but if they did one day again.

Given the ongoing disastrous figures for The Project especially here in Sydney (48k last night) … is there a case for Ten to run a different program in its place for Sydney given the market size? How long can Ten keep scraping the bottom of the ratings barrel for this flop??

No. If you air a different program in Sydney, The Project will completely missed out of the Top 20 in the ratings, and we will never hear the end of it in these forums my some members, saying “Where’s The Project? It didn’t air last night”, and The Daily Mail will also have even more of a field day.
The show will be on at least until the end of this year…

Yes Shanos, that is a very good idea.

It would totally work because this is what used to happen with The Footy Show. It was a totally different show in Sydney and Melbourne but it was just listed in the ratings as The Footy Show.

10 need to do something because The Project is a disaster.

10 have a solution but they aren’t thinking of it or using it. It’s to be balanced with its approach and panelists… or have two conflicting people rather than go one way and at a minimum eliminate half your potential audience.

The new panel of The Project are nobodies in comparison to the old panel. They should’ve picked more recognisable people.

There is a strong case for Neighbours to return to the 6.30pm slot. The Project could be cut to 30 minutes.

Or maybe they could give Lisa Wilkinson her own show?

So looking at a total people number is only a small part of the story. Networks are looking at the key demographics for a program’s performance. In Sydney, The Project 7pm did so well in 16-39 for example that it ranked ahead of Seven News. That also put it ahead of every other program on Seven. It also outrated every program on ABC. That helped 10 to rank second in Sydney in all the key advertising demos - main channel and network.

I love your work TV.Cynic but you keep talking about key demos of 16-39 like we are living in 1992.

How many advertisers targetting 16 year olds do you think decide the best way to reach this young audience is to make a TV ad and place it in The Project?

If the Project’s existence depends on its numbers in the niche 16-39, then it needs to absolutey dominate it, not just spin with “oh well the 7pm Project narrowly beat channel 7 in 16-39s in the news last night”’

The numbers The Project acheived last night are not good enough because they are not commercially viable and the 6.30 Project was nowhere to be seen - again

How do you know this?

Receipts please.
