It’s not necessarily about best, but about return on investment. TV is still an important part of a brand’s overall advertising strategy. If I’m an advertiser targeting that 16-39 age group, The Project allows me to advertise to my target market on a network that skews towards that audience and likely for cheaper than other networks.
Seven and “live” really shouldn’t be in the same sentence together, because they don’t do live (apart from news and sport). Even with sport, they insisted on a 60 minute delay for Friday Night Football for several years so they could show Better Homes and Gardens first.
As has been stated by many numerous times overnight audiences do not sell the advertising and do not determine the profitability of the hour. The project makes 6 hours a week of content. The costs for that content are aggregated over the 50 weeks it airs across the year. If the Project costs $12m a year to produce and books $13m in advertising across multiple platforms then it makes $1m in profit. I’m not sure Paramount would want to lose that $1m in profit annually the show makes.
My figures may be totally off but they are used for purely illustrative purposes to explain the simple economics that some people have yet to grasp.
Thursdays have been a bit of a ratings wasteland for some time - Nine don’t bother putting anything there because a decent portion of the year is already programmed with NRL on Thursdays which makes it ripe for the picking if someone (anyone?) can get something that will work.
