The Voice

It’s definitely interesting because I can The Voice heading that way…
There’s still lots of people watching the show (it was the #1 non-news show before Big Brother came along last week) but an interesting point is nearly half of them are over 55. The key demo is 25-54s and then 16-39s - Big Brother and Masterchef have absolutely smashed The Voice in those demos which are crucial for advertising.

Shows like MKR know what they were and never pretended to be anything high brow.
The original premise of the Voice with its auditions with judges backs turned so that they couldnt judge someones stage presence, looks, or entertainment value, was supposed to be sold as a talent show with integrity. I never fell for it, but i hope these tacky stunts make the rest of the audience see it for what it is.

Agreed - the concept that the tables had turned with contestants possessing the power to choose coaches and have renowned singers begging ordinary, unknown singers to pick them was exciting and good entertainment in the beginning. It rated so well that shows like X Factor were axed because having a plain old singing show was not as interesting and coaches spinning around on chairs.
I don’t think producers even hide the fact that their focus is on making good TV. Now it’s all about the coaches bickering with each other - it’s way too over-produced and dramatised.

I thought it was a strange tactic by Nine to run promos essentially for Monday’s episode as if the events would occur on Sunday. I won’t be surprised if people were disillusioned. There have been plenty of instances in the past when promos have covered events in advance like this but they usually say something like “next week” and promote a group of episodes. This promo was possibly unique in including no content that related to the episode it was promoting.

Totally agree, I noticed that as well and thought it was misleading advertising.

I think Nine should be making their promos clearer.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they did that on purpose. All in all, it was a pretty boring filler episode with a lot of no-chair turns and no ‘outstanding’ voices.

I know a lot of people kept waiting and waiting for the ‘cheating scandal’ to play out - Twitter was pretty angry that they essentially led us on to believe it was happening today. Also many were saying they would have watched Masterchef/Big Brother, but were tuning in to see what the ‘cheating’ was - looks like their promo was effective in luring people to stay on their channel and not go elsewhere.

How long is Guy’s controversy going to take tomorrow? The blinds could have easily wrapped up tonight seeing as there’s only 2 spots left. Tomorrow’s 90-min episode will probably feature more no-chair turns and spend an hour on the whole ‘scandal’

A bit more info about tomorrow night looking at the promo at the end of tonight’s episode on 9Now.
Guy says to Kelly “I just… can’t believe you didn’t turn around for that”
My guess is Kelly is the only coach left with space on her team and doesn’t turn around. Guy somehow gets to turn around??
There’s also one last All-Star, Kat Jade from Season 3

It probably was effective - the ratings will be the judge of that, but it may cost Nine dearly in the long run if they continue with that tactic of promises of “scandals” but don’t deliver on them. People will just not bother tuning in.

If Guy’s team was full, then he would not have been able to turn his seat around. Did the producers forget to turn off that function, which led to the “cheating” scandal?

It did alright - 924k metro viewers but Masterchef was ahead with 945k. Big Brother has dropped quite a bit - 688k average (680k show and 695k eviction)

I think the big ‘scandal’ is more that Guy gets to keep the contestant so he has 13 on his team whilst the rest of the coaches get 12. That’s why the coaches can be heard saying ‘that’s not fair’ in the promos

Yep you’re definitely not the only one!! I though they would at least show the start of it in last night’s episode… if they’re going to advertise it as Sunday 7:00pm: Dirtiest Superstar Clash of the Year they have to at least give us something, not just tell us at the end of the episode that it’s happening tomorrow

BB might not be high brow, but it redeems itself being fast paced, high-entertainment, well produced, well cast with some creative ideas in the format.

IMO the voice is lower brow, drama is even more contrived, and has no entertainment value.

Big Brother (like many shows of its kind) was never really promised as a form of high brow entertainment.

The Voice on the other hand, used to be excellent but nowadays it’s bordering on unwatchable. Between the excruciating ad-breaks, judges‘ antics, not getting to know the contestants well at all and fake drama is too much for this viewer. Even though its production values seem impressive compared to X Factor (I personally disagree, they’re both just as good IMO), it’s far from quality television.

You’re right about the contrived drama- the pitching is too drawn out and the fake fights are annoying. Don’t even get me started on the ad breaks
However I do think it is good entertainment value - there’s no shows currently on Aussie TV which focuses on music (AGT and Masked Singer air later in the year) and obviously with theatres/festivals/concerts cancelled this is a way of getting some form of “live” music.
I personally find the battles more bearable - they tend to get through those rounds faster without as much talking.
The big problem is they draw out the blind auditions so it lasts 10 episodes but then they cram the knockouts, battles and finals all into 10 episodes as well.

Agreed - we don’t need to hear every contestant’s backstory in the blinds - a simple name, age, and state they live in is fine. Once they progress further, they can give a bit more information and I would be more interested in hearing their backstory once they go through to the finals.
Airing out everyone’s backstory in the blinds is just information overload and we won’t remember anything about them next round.

Last night was a good example of why the block isn’t great. When 3 judges turn, and 2 are blocked, a contestant has to go with the remaining judge by default. In last nights example the singer wanted Kelly but had to go with Guy.

Takes away from the point of difference of The Blinds with the contestant choosing their mentor.

I don’t think the block does anything except create drama. There’s no advantage for a contestant if a coach blocks another coach from getting you, all it does is let the coaches fight and carry on.
Reinforces that The Voice is for ‘entertainment’ more than just a ‘singing show’. Most likely why it continues to rate well but doesn’t produce any real stars.

If you look at the promo closely it’s easy to figure out what happened. Guy completed his team last night but somehow is the only one of the coaches to turn around for a singer tonight which is what the reference to breaching the rules is about.

This looks like fake producer manufactured drama as your button is usually disabled once you fill your team so you wont be able to turn around.
