Sunday 28 March-
Peter Van Onselen is back hosting with Lisa tonight.
He’s barely said boo. Interesting to watch.
Yes and Lisa really having the last word on all the opinion sections.
It was really strange Tommy pointed out they hadn’t hosted together for a few weeks - they both seemed really uncomfortable. Many viewers wouldn’t have thought anything of his absence, so why bring it to their attention.
Anyone with social media or staying up to date with the news on this issue would be aware of the situation, which I imagine would be a large part of their audience.
Awkward show tonight, Tommy even made a direct reference to the situation with the clip from Insiders this morning, suggesting The Project is just trying to laugh off all that Peter has said and written over the last couple of weeks. Poor decision to bring him back, and quite hypocritical of them in my opinion.
Did he? He said something about PVO appearing on The insiders not about the issue which was what he wrote in The Australian.
He said plenty, including in depth discussion of the sex scandals in the Morrison government.
She was definitely taking more control tonight, like she was the one who was steering the ship.
A couple of days before he published that column in The Australian, Peter appeared on Insiders. He was criticised for saying whilst he believed the women, it puts him in a difficult position when he is friends with the accused. Tommy joked tonight that the next time he appears on Insiders, he should duck behind the couch and run, referring to the blooper of an ABC staffer being caught on air today. There were a few inference tonight about the controversy surrounding Peter.
They’re not shying away from it and there certainly was a more serious tone from Lisa tonight. But my point was that it wasn’t as awkward as others said.
I happened to be watching this with my sister tonight who doesn’t keep up with what is said on social media. She hadn’t heard anything about the controversy and didn’t think anyone was acting any different than usual. She didn’t pick up on any vibes or awkwardness. I’d say that would be true for the majority of viewers.
I love the PVO & Lisa combo. Lisa really is the news presenter of the moment and PVO’s insights compliment her well. I’d watch a weekend breakfast show with last night’s team.
They don’t have much chemistry to begin with anyway. I think Lisa is professional so yeah I agree there wasn’t anything scandalous on air. But, Lisa doing 75% of the show last night was unusual and worthy of being pointed out here by others. I’d speculate though it has more to do with Peter hosting being last minute than executives purposely excluding him.
That’s an overexaggeration. She wasn’t doing that much more. I watched the repeat last night after reading the comments here. As I said before, you could tell Lisa was steering the show more, so they wouldn’t go off course but PVO was still making his points at length. He initiated two lengthy discussions. I don’t think he contributed much less than usual.
Peter only did one package (the Jobkeeper one) last night and did the alternative headline/coming up teasers. Lisa did the intros, VO for the other four or five packages, the news headlines and the throw-to-breaks/outros. Usually the format is to alternate- one reads the intro of the story and the other does the VO. Certainly felt like, particularly in the first half, that she was the host and he was more of a panellist.
Tegan George great tonight! Hope they use her a lot more - enjoy her takes on Twitter and her politics reporting is top shelf.
It looks so much better with the entire team at the desk. Took them long enough.
Totally agree. She was a lot of fun. It’s about time they mixed it up a bit and got some fresh talent for some different opinions.
Yep tegan could be the one they are looking for with all these experiments. She was a natural on the panel, good personality and good insights.
Hope the comedian interviews at the end of every episode do not last beyond the comedy festival. They have all been terrible. Tonight they had tommy, yesterday they had those guys with ice cream and last week they had Dave Thornton. Perhaps it is the lack of audience, but the comedy does not land, it’s painful viewing, does not make me want to buy whatever it is they are selling.
Agree - the comedy appearances have been pretty awful this year. They have been better in previous years with an audience and more talent available too!
Tonights show actually wasn’t so great at all. I’m not sold on Tegan as yet… she didn’t say much but perhaps that will change with a few more appearances.
Hopefully we will see Tegan occasionally at the desk in the future, the show definitely needs more fresh faces that can add a better perceptive in their chosen field.
