The Newsreader

I watched the first episode. Doesn’t disappoint.

Helen’s new show is clearly based on the early inception of ACA from 1988. The set, desk and look all scream A Current Affair with Jana Wendt.

I don’t think they were anywhere near drunk enough at the Logies

Comparison of the Logie wins for Channel 6 to th 1989 Logies.

In the best sport 6’s Olympic coverage was in place of 10’s Seoul Olympics and for Gold logie Craig McLaughlin was replaced in the line up.

Even the promo with “Lady Writer” and voiceover nearly word for word.

Out of interest, what set is News at Six based on in season 3?

For the record, the ABC didn’t air the 80s era ident before tonight’s episode - for the first, and possibly the second season, the ABC aired an ident from the mid-80’s, which appeared to have the music changed.

The first episode of this season just aired on the ABC (in Melb and Syd). What a great episode to start off Season Three. I loved the Logies Edition of this show. And a surprise winner of the Gold Logie too.

For the record, there is a reference in Episode 1 to Nine being a network in The Newsreader universe.

It was great to hear the voice of John Deeks as Logies announcer.

Two things I notice in the closing credits:
The producers also thanked Sigourney Weaver, Jacki McDonald and Bryan Brown (Hall of Fame inductee in 1989) for use of their images.
Lionsgate is the international distributor of season 3. Lionsgate bought eOne (which distributed the first two seasons) in late 2023.

What do you mean? Every episode of the new season is there as I mentioned earlier, along with the first two.

Does anyone know if they are doing The Newsreader podcast this season?

Great first episode - really enjoyed it. The Logies recreation was excellent and the set especially was spot on (easily compared on Youtube but I also clearly remember watching it as a kid).

And based on the awards it won (Rob Rickards accepting the award for the Seoul Olympics etc), it all but confirms the newsroom is based on Channel 10’s.

I miss this era of TV so much!

It’s a good show and quite good how they try to recreate things from the era. But some things they get quite wrong.

The scene in the deserted hotel kitchen made no sense. Even if the food had been served earlier in the evening that kichen would have been busy with staff cleaning up all the plates, cutlery, glasses being used throughout the night.

Also a bit unrealistic when they were catching taxis at the end and all the News at Six crew were there at the same time but hardly any of the hundreds of other guests were around.

I ended up watching all of Season 3 last night. Some great storylines for the season and trying to say this without spoilers, but I think in the final ep all the characters had an appropriate ending to their respective story arc.

I don’t think there is a companion podcast this season.
