Do we know if the The Newsreader Podcast will be back with season three?
It was a good companion product with season two.

Excellent and very useful there, @TV.Cynic. Wasn’t expecting the timeline for episode 1 to start so early (and span such a long length of time!), given everything in the lead-up to this new series implied the episode would pretty much be about the Logies and that’s where it’d be starting off. The dates for the final three episodes interestingly have a very similar set-up to the final half of series 2 (ep5 set directly after ep4, with ep6 set some months later), which gives us an idea of the dynamic between the leads (and to some extent the ensemble cast) for that part of the series. Is the information within that graphic publicly available at all, as I haven’t been able to find a source with all the episode titles beyond the first?
New, short interview with Lucas reveals that Chai Hansen is back as a main cast member for this series, after Hansen previously disclosed scheduling conflicts between s2 and his Amazon Prime Video series prevented him from appearing in the former as much as he would’ve liked. ('The Newsreader' returns for its third season with drama and deceit)
Series 3, Episode 2
Sunday 9 February 8.30pm
When news of a dramatic Alaskan oil spill breaks on the day of Public Eye’s launch, Helen (Anna Torv) is pressured to rethink the format of her show while also combatting a brutal act of sabotage from Lindsay (William McInnes).
Meanwhile, Dale (Sam Reid) fears News At Six won’t have enough to compete with Helen’s show, calling on a heavily pregnant Noelene (Michelle Lim Davidson) to help him land a live interview with Prime Minister Bob Hawke, hoping to address rumours of Hawke’s infidelity.
That is from ABC Media.
Michael Lucas talks about season 3, especially the lengths he went to in re-creating scenes from the 1989 Logie Awards.
I thought it was very ambitious to recreate the 1989 Logies as the basis for a large portion of the first episode. Plus rewriting history by changing who won several of the major awards was an interesting choice. Unfortunately, the wins didn’t clear up the question of which, if any, news bulletin/network the series was based on.
I feel an angry Craig McLachlan rant will be forthcoming at some point. All signs in this article seem to suggest they’ll be no mention of him as a 1989 Gold Logie nominess.
I am so keen. Might have to do a rewatch of seasons one and two!

Dale (Sam Reid) embraces his continued success by hosting a lavish birthday party, whilst also resolving to get rid of Lindsay (William McInnes).
Helen (Anna Torv), meanwhile, is struggling. Personally, she’s working with a therapist to manage her emotional volatility. Professionally, Public Eye’s ratings are dire and the show is facing the axe.
But when they’re offered exclusive coverage of the escalating conflict in Tiananmen Square, Helen sees an opportunity to save her show…
That was interesting that Anna seemed to have quite a bit of input into the script and her character, changing a few scenes and ad-libbing some lines.
ABC Director of Content, Jennifer Collins said, “The Newsreader Season Three is extraordinary. I never thought that show would get better. But seriously, S3 is next level. The characters, the compelling storyline, this time the real life events are the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square, and, of course, the 1989 Logies. This series will not disappoint.”
This season is heralded as “the end of an era” with Anna Torv and Sam Reid concluding. Does that mean final season?
“This was always designed as in three acts… the beauty of the news reader is that this series, absolutely, is a full stop on the character arc of Helen (Torv) and Dale (Reid). There have been discussions around spin offs or something else in the vein of Newsreader, and given the calibre of the team we’re going to be open to those conversations. So never say, never but at this stage, we’re seeing S3 very much as a very satisfying conclusion to a wonderful world class series.”
Season 3 will have a premiere event at Australian Centre of Moving Image at Melbourne’s Federation Square tonight.
Michael Lucas posted this photo of Sam Reid with Stephen Peacocke and Daniel Henshall from the season 3 premiere at ACMI on Instagram last night.
There was also a Q&A panel following the premiere. Sam Reid, Michelle Lim Davidson, Stephen Peacocke and producer Emma Freeman were on the panel.

Keep an eye out for a special cameo by Erin, one of the show’s biggest fans. She plays Suzanne Hayes in one of the episodes in season 3.
This season you will be meeting a special new character.

Her name is #SuzanneHayes, and she works in the News At Six library.
She has an unspoken role in the show, but she will pop up in a very special scene!
I hope you love her as much as I do!#ErinRankin #TheNewsreader pic.twitter.com/pTIXGhmvsL
Erin and her mother Kylie were both invited by the producers to visit the set in March last year, which led to cameo roles in this season.
Mum’s character is called #JanetteMcAllister, and just like my #SuzanneHayes, she works in the News At Six library, hence why you don’t usually see us in the office! 😉#EmmaFreeman sent us this pic of our ID cards before the day!#ErinRankin #KylieRankin #TheNewsreader pic.twitter.com/ZChm6BmVir
