Internationally, NCIS: Sydney will premiere in the U.S. on Monday, 13 November on The CBS Television Network, with additional Paramount+ international markets to follow at a later date.
Filmed against the spectacular backdrop of one of the world’s most breathtaking harbour cities, NCIS: Sydney is the first-ever international series from the global NCIS franchise outside of the US, and sees rising international tensions in the Indo-Pacific. The brilliant and eclectic team of U.S. NCIS Agents and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are grafted into a multi-national taskforce, to keep naval crimes in check, in the most contested patch of ocean on the planet.
The NCIS: Sydney team will be led by NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey played by Olivia Swann (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The River Wild) and her 2IC AFP counterpart, Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey played by Todd Lasance (Without Remorse, Spartacus: War of the Damned). They are joined by Sean Sagar (The Covenant, Mea Culpa) as NCIS Special Agent, DeShawn Jackson; Tuuli Narkle (Mystery Road: Origin, Bad Behaviour) as AFP Liaison Officer, Constable Evie Cooper; Mavournee Hazel (Shantaram, Halifax: Retribution) as AFP Forensic Scientist, Bluebird ‘Blue’ Gleeson and William McInnes (The Newsreader, Total Control) as AFP Forensic Pathologist, Dr Roy Penrose.
NCIS: Sydney, the first international spinoff for a CBS Studios global drama franchise, was commissioned last year by Paramount+ Australia and the country’s Paramount-owned Network 10
On CBS, NCIS: Sydney will air Mondays 10 PM, following a rerun of the mothership series at 9 PM. The 10 PM slot, previously labeled as “Paramount+ original TBA” in the revised CBS fall schedule released in July, had been earmarked for NCIS: Sydney ; the delay in the announcement was due to hammering out the necessary deals to make it happen.
Show is a p+ AU commission and you’re right to run on p+ in UK, UK and other markets there would not be a sale. But from my knowledge even though both CBS and P+ AU have the same parent company - when a broadcast network picks up a show from a streamer in the US a sale and money does change hands. CBS would pay P+ for the broadcast rights. They are extremely lucrative with the opportunity to sell ads. I can confirm with my LA contacts but pretty certain CBS would have paid - as ridiculous as that sounds
Also a deal does need to me hammered out as unions / actors / rights etc for broadcast are very different for streaming.
But it has to happen. When you’re a business it’s all checks and balances.
Paramount+ Australia are not going to spend the money to produce something and give it to CBS for free, for them to make a profit and make their balance sheet look good. CBS will pay for the content and make some profit. Paramount+ Australia can use the payment to produce something else.
Spiderwick Chronicles series.
A Paramount owned IP, produced by Paramount Television Studios. Just because Disney cancelled it doesn’t mean it automatically goes to P+.
Universal Television pitched Brooklyn Nine-Nine to sister company NBC and they refused so Fox bought it.
As mentioned Television Studios budgets wouldn’t look good if their sister networks or streaming services just got shows for free and all the revenue.
CBS announced overnight that NCIS: Sydney would now premiere on November 14, and airing on Tuesday nights in the 8pm timeslot currently occupied by the original NCIS series.
When CBS airs the 20th anniversary NCIS marathon in the US this week, it will now include an “In memoriam” card in remembrance of McCallum (image from Deadline):
