The Morning Show

Tuesday 6 October-

Jodie Speers presented news updates this morning.

Good choice to use Jodie this morning since she would’ve done the 5am news and could stick around for the news updates on TMS.

I still hope that Ann Sanders will fill-in on The Morning Show’s news updates one of these days!, although I won’t hold my breath.

Is Today Extra as bad as The Morning Show when it comes to the amount of infomercials?

I know it basically pays for the show, but just by having a look on 7plus, I counted 32 minutes of advertorials in The Morning Show today. The show ran for 1hr 40 mins (not including the normal ads), so that means there was only 1hr 8 mins of proper content.

Given the show runs for 2 hours 15 mins, that means that only 50% of that portion of time from 9:15am-11:30am was actual show content, and the other 50% was normal ads and infomercials.

That’s pretty poor IMO. Viewers want proper segments, not the pointless advertorials.

It’s always been that way though, hasn’t it?

Doesn’t seem to have put people off.

It’s possible it’s increased since The Daily Edition ended.

Channel Seven failed to disclose commercial arrangement

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found Channel Seven Sydney in breach of broadcasting rules for failing to disclose a commercial arrangement in relation to a segment on The Morning Show in May 2020.

The program included a segment titled ‘The latest trends for your winter wardrobe,’ which promoted clothing ranges at department store Big W.

An ACMA investigation found that while some viewers may have recognised the segment was an advertisement, this was not sufficient to meet the requirements of the Television Industry Code of Practice.

“Viewers should not be left to guess whether a segment is a paid advertisement,” ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said.

“Broadcasters have an obligation to disclose arrangements of this kind. Failing to do so can harm people’s confidence in the credibility of Australian factual TV programs.”

Under the Code, broadcasters must adequately bring the existence of the commercial arrangement to the attention of viewers.

“This investigation should serve as a reminder to all TV broadcasters to review their internal processes and assure themselves that they have the right procedures in place to comply with disclosure rules,” Ms O’Loughlin said.

Channel Seven Sydney has indicated that human error was the cause of their failure to disclose the commercial arrangement and that their client, Big W, had no involvement with this breach.

In response to the findings, Channel Seven Sydney will report to the ACMA in three months on the effectiveness of the actions it has taken. This includes implementing a new sign-off procedure to ensure commercial arrangements are acknowledged in the credits of the program, as well as further education and training of staff.

This is the first ACMA investigation into compliance with the current disclosure provisions.

Really? What about the Today segments last year on how to dress a room? It was clearly sponsored by Kmart and featured in their 7.30 half hour. I recall mentioning it at the time.

Matt Doran co-hosting this morning, filling in for Larry.

Good choice. Looks like he’ll be Larry’s fill-in going forward with Ryan Phelan no longer at the network.

On another note, this is Larry’s first day off in 5 and 1/2 months.

What was everyone’s thoughts of Matt on TMS this morning?

Personally I thought he did quite a good job and it was nice to have a male host who’s not just taking the piss out of every segment by making jokes (I do love Larry but it’s nice to see someone else).

Matt and Kylie were an okay duo but I reckon Matt and Ange Cox would be great together.

slightly off topic

They actually can and have investigated before without complaints. A bizarre yet good recent one was Nine’s stupid ‘splitting’ of movies last year, they put them on notice and hastily stopped.

There was no official investigation/report, more likely a tip off? I recall Knoxy TVT reporting it.
