The increasingly crowded streaming market

Amazon slashing headcount across Prime Video, MGM and Twitch.

I have to ask…does anyone here use Prime? I know it’s bigger in the US, but seems to struggle gaining traction here.

I’ve only just started using it recently using a family members subscription, the selection is quite good but interface is a bit meh, but if I’m being honest I’ve probably used the Hayu add on subscription more.

I think they’ve done well with some of their more recent commissions like Deadloch, Lost Flowers of Alice Hart etc, as well as securing ICC Cricket and adding live beIN channels too which really bolsteres their offering.

Not sure how much weight this carries too, but I live in a large apartment complex and being the observant type I’ve definitely noticed more Amazon prime branded parcels of late too.

There’s some real quality stuff on there. I use a family members subscription. I’ve been watching it more the past year. I cancelled Stan. I personally subscribe to Disney, Paramount and Netflix.

The cheaper price point than Netflix, Disney and Binge will be attractive to some.

I think it has the argument of, it has less content, but if you’re only paying half as much and you’re getting free delivery then may not need to be a cancel.

If people are looking for one to cancel, it may be Prime, but the price may be keeping people hanging on.

I’m not sure how well the ad tier is going to go down in Australia though, I think that might cause a few cancellations.

Just as well they have ICC cricket to keep people coming back over the next few years.

Yeah the interface is a bit clunky which is a shame because their library is quite deep.

agree, if it wasn’t for apps like JustWatch - I wouldn’t have found half the stuff I’ve found buried on Prime

I recently enjoyed Shelter on Prime

I did as well. Unfortunately I think I read somewhere it was axed and there will be no second season despite the cliffhanger at the end.

From my understanding isn’t Prime the second or third biggest streamer in Australia behind Netflix and Disney?

Most in the US already had Prime when Amazon launched Prime Video so it’s fair to say there is a sizable portion of the customer base who have never used it but count as subscribers.

I have had Prime for over a decade for the shipping benefits but hardly ever watch anything on Prime Video, as I’m sure is the case with many others in the US. Video is just a bonus for those that wanted it.

In 2023 in Australia it was Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video and Stan. Big gap between one and two but not much in between two, three and four.

Prime is weird they also have stuff in their catalogue about aliens and illumanati .

The statement was signed by the SPA, several pan-European production bodies, Italy’s Associazione Produttori Audiovisivi, Association Québécoise de la Production Médiatique and the Canadian Media Producers Association in Canada, the Ibero-American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers in Latin America, Germany’s Produzentenverband, The Screen Production and Development Association in New Zealand and Screen Producers Ireland (see the full list below).

It’s hot garbage too.

Search is broken.

The app is a mess, shows and movies are missing episodes and instalments.

It would be nice if they’d split up the included with prime and rentable / 3rd party streamers.

And my biggest gripe with it currently is Top Gear. It’s split across 4 titles, one suggesting 27 seasons but when you scroll to early seasons it says error loading. Turns out these seasons are only available in Japan despite showing as available here.

Disney, Fox Sports and Warner Bros. Discovery are teaming up for a sports streaming venture set to launch by the end of the year.

Details are still coming into focus about the service, which will pool resources among three of the biggest owners of sports rights. One aspect yet to be determined is how the new venture will affect linear broadcasts.

Enough with the streaming platforms. They should be looking to consolidate, not add more.

This is a consolidation? While it’s new, it’s WBD/Fox/Disney realise they can’t all be selling sports streaming services.
