The increasingly crowded streaming market

I don’t think most of these people ever watched the TV news much. Some have recalled fondly watching The Simpsons together as a family at 6pm.

Your not doing your username justice :stuck_out_tongue:.

At least its not like the US with like 80 or more streaming services.
I would like to see Hulu to come to Australia.

Including me, who managed to watch it with the family AFTER I was born and enjoyed it. I can still recall an embarrassing moment when I cried over a short Teletubbies-related gag in one Season 15 episode…

My TV isn’t that big…

I actually think there’s a big gap in the market for news streaming. I’d like to see a paid app for multiple news channels. Wishful thinking I know, but it could work if Foxtel commissioned one.

I tried CuriousityStream a couple of weeks ago (which is a global doco VOD service) and it was pretty good, but nothing like the content from Discovery, Nat Geo and BBC.

Livestation was a really good app/service which offered a range of news channels (eg; Al Jazeera, CNN, France 24, etc) - think it shut down a few years ago.

About CuriosityStream, I really wanted to like it but the quality of programs wasn’t anywhere near what I get with Foxtel Now (am a ‘grandfathered’ customer so only pay $10 per month for the docs pack)

Regarding the binge model vs weekly drop… my personal opinion is that I prefer the weekly drop - i love a good binge but rarely have the time and my biggest complaint with Netflix is that their shows get lost in alot of noise for me.

For example, I really want to watch their new show Unbelivable but I’m in the middle of watching Orange is the new black and after that I want to watch Glow and When they see us… I typically only get time to watch one maybe 2 episodes of something a night and this is made up of stuff on free to air as well… so can take weeks to get through netflix series… by the time I’m ready they’ve been out for weeks if not months and i either forget about it or the conversation and hype has gone away.

Weekly drops allow you to watch with others, read online articles, participate in conversation either at the watercooler or via online forums… the binge model imo doesn’t really allow that.

I find it a little more difficult to follow shows week to week now that I’ve become accustomed to bingeing content on Netflix.

I’ve been looking forward to the new seasons of Peaky Blinders and Succession but I’ve held off starting both until closer to the airing of the final episodes. I started Peaky this week and hope to catch up by the time the series final airs next week. The Succession series final doesn’t air until mid October so I’ll hold off a couple more weeks before i start that and watch Unbelievable while I’m waiting. Glitch is waiting to be viewed on the PVR until a few more eps go to air.

I’ll probably follow that pattern when these new services start to drop eps week to week. I’m likely to wait until a couple of shows have full seasons on a service, subscribe to it for the month and then move on to another service that has full seasons of shows I’m interested in. The downside to this is that there’s the potential to run into spoiler before I get to watch things.

You don’t think Nine would ever have their own subscription streaming service? Sure there’s Stan but I reckon they’d eventually do something with the Nine Network brand, even if it’s just a premium version of 9Now with no ads and some exclusive content.

For obvious reasons, I think the ABC & SBS wouldn’t be allowed to do a subscription version of iView or ON DEMAND.

Probably will just rename it 9Stan

On Demand has some good stuff that could’ve been on Stan, You’re The Worst, Last Man on Earth and next month New Girl all seasons (on demand ). I’ve also found a doco on Freaks and Geeks, Porn Laid Bare miniseries and upcoming stuff like The Rise of Trash TV, The Osbournes:The Price of Reality, Letterkenny Season 1 coming soon, Struggle Street coming back. South Park starting.

Stuff like Izombie , The 100, Z Nation it’s been so long since I watched the seasons maybe 2 years that I can’t just go into the next episode, probably have to rewatch whole seasons now as I cannot remember what happened.

I had a look at the trailer for the new Apple TV plus series Dickinson and the trailer didn’t appeal to me . I heard Oprah is going to have a show on there too, so nothing there for me and Disney Plus …(only The Simpsons if it is on there).

Netflix Stan and Amazon Prime Video is enough and maybe subscribe in and out to Disney/Apple tv plus

Acorn seem ok but seems to be missing seasons of shows, not complete for some reason.

Who cares if it is crowded. The more choice the better.

I can subscribe to Netflix for a month and binge a couple of seasons of whatever, then unsubscribe and sign-up for a month of Disney+ to watch a season of some Marvel TV show, rinse / repeat / etc.

You’d be crazy to be signed-up to more than two or three at any one time.

Interesting report from 9 tonight

It doesn’t appear NBC Universal’s new streaming service Peacock will make it here anytime soon.

AFR is reporting NBCU is close to a signing an expanded content agreement across broadcast and streaming with Foxtel. NBCU’s movies and TV shows are expected to form part of the library of content on offer to subscribers of Foxtel’s new drama and entertainment streaming service, known internally as Project Ares, which the AFR believes will be launched in March or April next year.

The AFR report also states NBCU is “also understood to be close to an agreement with Foxtel’s smaller rival Fetch”.

No mention of 10 All Access, even though it claims to compare all of Australia’s streaming services.

No mention of the numerous services available for programs in languages other than English* and niche services like Hayu and Acorn.

*Of course Netflix has a wide range of content in various languages from around the world.

Tonight’s episode of Gruen on ABC talked about streaming services in Australia.

If you haven’t watched tonight’s episode, you can catch up on ABC iview.
