The Great Outdoors returns

Reimagined travel series to showcase the best of Australia and the world

The Seven Network today announced the return of The Great Outdoors, with a reimagined version of the much-loved series set to showcase the best of Australian and international travel.

Set to premiere at 7.00pm on Saturday, 5 October on Channel 7 and 7plus, The Great Outdoors taps the nation’s enduring wanderlust, with new presenters James Tobin, Phil Burton, Teigan Nash, Kimberley Busteed, Lee Carseldine and Chris Parsons offering a glimpse into the world’s most unique experiences from our own backyard and across the world.

The Great Outdoors team will scour the globe to bring viewers extraordinary and unmissable adventures, epic scenery and vibrant food and culture.

Travel with the team as they visit all four corners of the compass in Australia, from diving off the Western Australian coast to trekking the deep forests of Tasmania; hop in the passenger seat on a classic convertible road trip along the iconic Route 66 in the US; and scale the snow-covered heights of northern Europe.

James Tobin said: “I grew up watching The Great Outdoors and still can’t quite believe I’ve now got one of the best gigs on TV as I share these incredibly unique travel destinations with our viewers.

“Filming in the US was a real highlight of this series for me and I can’t wait to show viewers what we got up to over there.”

Phil Burton said: “I’ve travelled the world with my music, but what I realised through filming The Great Outdoors is some of the hidden gems we have right here in Australia.

“Having the opportunity to delve into Western Australia in a way I’d never seen it before was an incredible opportunity and I couldn’t be more delighted to be part of the show.”

Whether it’s a sneak peek into ranch life in Texas, hiking Switzerland’s largest glacier or hanging high above Perth, one thing’s for sure – the all-new The Great Outdoors will have viewers planning their next holiday adventure.

Will this be the original hour format, move to a half hour format (like when it paired with Better Homes And Gardens or move to a 90 minute format like Better Home And Gardens now is.

Also wondering if a return of The World Around Us revival could be on the cards for Seven. Some of those documentaries were very interesting

Good to have this back.

I think Phil Burton and James Tobin are good editions to the show. As to the “weekender” presenters from various cities there too.

I think this is a good idea to bring back and fits perfectly on Saturday nights. There is definitely a regained interest in travel shows with Travel Guides doing very well on it’s recent season. Getaway does decently for Nine as a News lead in too.

Wow… I suggested this a year ago when Seven was going to loose Saturday Night AFL Games in 2025.

Seven seems to be bringing back its much loved network brands.

It was a much-loved show in the 2000s and good to see it back in its original format

IIRC, The Great Outdoors switched to a one-hour format airing on Monday nights in April 2002 (previously it was Tuesdays at 8:00pm, immediately following BH&G) when The Weakest Link was axed suddenly that month.

I wonder what Seven will revive next…?

At the moment, it is sheduled as 30 minute episodes.

Assuming it will be around the 8 episode run? Airing in October and November, before the summer break (and the cricket/ Big Bash starts).

The Great Outdoors returns. We’re travelling USA’s Route 66, taking to the skies of the Sunshine Coast, hanging only by harness high above Perth, and hiking Switzerland’s largest glacier.

In 1994, in the original format, The Great Outdoors was at 7:30pm Fridays before being moved to a half hour format at 8pm following Better Homes And Gardens at 7:30pm Tuesday, with Blue Heelers moving to 8:30pm in 1995

My only request is that they bring back the original theme song

Not the remix from the 2000s? Has often been seen across 7Two’s schedule the past decade.

Then they moved the last couple of seasons to Saturdays. BH&G had already moved to Fridays, very successfully, in 2005. Even Blue Heelers ended on Saturdays. Then Seven’s ‘getting the axe’ timeslot.

Seven were trying to kill BH as they didn’t want the licence fees from Southern Star, they moved it to Saturdays and only aired the finale on a Sunday which rated very well.

I read somewhere that Seven were reviewing both Blue Heelers and All Saints before Blue Heelers was axed after 510 episodes. All Saints was axed around 3 years later, falling at 493 episodes.

We’re getting off topic, but Wood told Bucklow of News Corp a few years ago it was due to David Leckie signing (with Ten) the then new record 2007 AFL deal and locking Nine out after half a decade in the post Kerry era. A way for Seven to tighten finances.

I liked how they made it a two-parter, also getting back some old faces for the finale, such as mid-90s cop turned villain Adam Cooper (Damian Walshe Howling) and ESD Inspector Monica Draper (Peta Doodson), who’d been a recurring character since the first or second season.

I wonder if Ernie Dingo or Di Smith might contribute occasional segments

Yes, it would be great to see some guest appearances made by the original Presenters.

That would be nice, I presume you mean the one from the 90s/early 00s? I went searching on YouTube and found these:

1996 (0:20):

Or 2001 (3:03 & 3:30):

A shame there isn’t a longer clean clip.

Has anyone seen a promo for the new series?
