The Grand Tour

Amazon’s The Grand Tour is now going to be shown on Seven.

Quite surprised that Amazon, an online streaming service (among many other things), has licensed the program to a terrestrial network, but definitely not complaining!

I think part of the deal is that they’ll promote Amazon and the fact Season 2 is premiering on the service.

So the eps will be a year out of date then?

Do TV shows have a “Use By” date now?

Possibly continuing Seven’s FU theme regarding the other commercial networks, in this case Nine (who are showing TopGear repeats)?

Of course Seven’s luring Marco away from Ten’s MasterChef for Hell’s Kitchen Australia didn’t turn out so well, but fortunately they have nothing to do with producing The Grand Tour.

I wonder if there’ll be commercials in the breaks advertising Amazon Prime Video, and could this be part of an ad campaign for the overall Amazon Prime service when it launches in Aus later this yet?

Is Australia the only country getting repeats of The Grand Tour being broadcast on TV?

There are 13 episodes in the first season. If Seven shows one episode each week uninterrupted, it should last until the second week of January just in time for Australian Open tennis.

They better do what Amazon did with the Namibia special - air it the next night, then episode 9 the next Wednesday.

For those who haven’t seen it, this show looks so much better in 4K than in 1080p

Technically exactly 11 months lmao

Season 2 will most likely begin airing whilst season 1 is airing on 7.

Which begs the question are we allowed to chat about S2 in here when it airs this or next month?

Seven is showing episode 2 (South Africa) next Monday which I think is a one-off timeslot before the launch of Instant Hotel. Next Wednesday should be episode 3.

Intrigued by this new Top Gear re-boot

Great first episode tonight, reminds me a lot of Top Gear. I don’t understand the joke about celebrity brain crash though, why bother invite guests to the show only to “kill” them before they arrive?

Basically as a big middle finger to the BBC (who likely own that format of interview+lap). Just like the London opening of Ep1.

Yes, the celebrity in a “Reasonably Priced Car” was probably my favourite segment in “Top Gear”.

Shame that they can’t have something similar in “The Grand Tour” then.

I thought last night’s episode was good, though it mainly seemed to be about those 3 exotic hybrid supercars and not a lot else, thus seemed a little bit one dimensional.

Will definitely be watching the next couple of episodes at least.

Episode 2 is a bit too stupid, as the three are sent off for an overly-dramatised SAS-style training course. Episode 3 is where it starts to find its feet again.

My personal favourite episodes are Episode 4 where they make their own environmentally friendly car bodies, and the two-part Namibia beach buggy special in Episodes 7 and 8. Keep an eye out…

Amazon has announced season 2 will be launched on Friday December 8. The giant studio tent has been given a permanent home at the Cotswolds in central England, while the hosts visited places like Croatia, Mozambique, Dubai, Spain, Switzerland, Colorado and New York.

A huge shame that the studio tent will no longer be moving around. Was hoping that they would come down under for studio filming at some point.

Wasn’t that also the main premise of the series? The show itself is “grand touring” around the world with a different audience each week?

Will still be watching regardless.

Well, they’re still touring the world so I think the title still stands.

I suppose the international filming must’ve been too much of a hassle to bother with. I mean, setting up a tent with a fully kitted out television studio seems exceptionally ambitious. If they wanted to continue they probably could have (given Amazon’s blank cheque), but I reckon the presenters were unhappy with the concept and that’s why it was canned.

I think one of the reasons was that unlike Top Gear, they couldn’t be particularly topical (seeing that the studio segments for the episodes were filmed out of order months in advance). Plus the presenters would have to spend several months overseas while filming.
