Why did the Footy Show do a Germany World Cup series of programs? Not exactly the same sport.
The same could probably be said about the London special. In both cases, the aim seemed to be building an international profile for the show by staging episodes in well-known venues during major eventsāwhether it was an Ashes tour that Nine already had access to, or something the network considered newsworthy and promotable, like a FIFA World Cup. Put simply, Nine tried to apply the same principles and tactics that had worked for Hey Hey Itās Saturday to The Thursday Footy Show in hopes of growing the brand. The challenge, of course, was that Australian Rules football wasnāt exactly a globally recognised sport, which meant the show had to rely more heavily on the appeal of its guest appearances.
So what did they gain from it? Other than a different look and feel. Did they follow the matches as part of the show (of either the football or the AFL)? As in results/analysis.
Thought Iād catch-up on some available on demand footy review content, so went to 9Now and Sunday Footy Show. Man⦠Now I know why I donāt usually watch this show. It is absolute bullshit.
In 30min, Iāve seen 2min of legitimate football chat and 28min of goofing around and giggling amongst the panel, 75% of which was dedicated to gag out-takes from Nine News with TJ and promos on Tom Morris and TJ.
Perhaps Iām preaching to the choir and shouldāve expected, but seriously, really disappointing.
Itās not really designed for hard-hitting analysis though.
Whereād @greenpea 's replay go?
He deleted it.
Ok !
Thereās a fair amount of it in the first 30 minutes then bits when they review matches played so far. But if it was just 2 hours of boring analysis it wouldnāt be worth watching.
I donāt recall it being a series of programs. My recollection was it was a one-off combined NRL/AFL Footy Show live from Germany. Australia making the FIFA World Cup was a big deal at the time. Nine cashing in probably.
Hereās one segment from that show

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the late Chris Doheny, the voice behind The Footy Show's iconic 'More Than a Game' anthem.
