And there we go…

Seven’s press release from today’s upfronts

Doctor Blake is back.
It’s 1963 and Australia sits on the cusp of a brave new world… a world awash with murder, mystery and mayhem. JFK has just been assassinated and the universe may never be the same again. Blake and Jean face greater challenges than they could ever have imagined. Haunted houses, flying saucers, deadly dentists, long lost daughters and much, much more. They’re challenges the two of them will face together. Buckle up – it’s going to be a hell of ride.
In 2018, Seven becomes the new home of number one Australian drama, The Doctor Blake Mysteries – returning much-loved stars Craig McLachlan (Blake) and Nadine Garner (Jean) to our screens, as well as other familiar faces and some new players.

Craig McLachlan told the Sunday Herald Sun he was delighted with Seven acquiring The Doctor Blake Mysteries for next year. He described the ABC’s decision to axe the show as “mind boggling”, “knuckleheaded” and “nutty”.

Channel Seven is thrilled to confirm it becomes the new home of number one Australian drama.

The return of the hit series will see much-loved stars Craig McLachlan (Blake) and Nadine Garner
(Jean) back on our screens, as well as other familiar faces and some new players.

Julie McGauran, Seven’s Head of Drama, said:

“The Doctor Blake Mysteries is not only the number one Australian drama, it has one of the most
adoring fan bases a show could wish for. With the passionate vision of Team Blake, the
extraordinary cast led by Craig McLachlan and Nadine Garner, and the commitment from the Blake
Army, we feel this series is a perfect fit for Channel Seven.”

George Adams, Series Co-Creator and Showrunner, said:

“We are all beyond excited to call Channel Seven the home of Blake and we cannot wait to open this
exciting new chapter in the extraordinary journey that has been and still is The Doctor Blake
Mysteries. This is a sweet reward for our loyal Blake Army, and it will be a pleasure to continue
the success of Blake with Seven who have already encouraged us to new heights in our storytelling.”

Tony Wright, Series Co-Creator and Creative Director December Media, said:

“It is a testament to everyone who has been involved in making The Doctor Blake Mysteries the
success it is that it has found a new home at Seven.”

Craig McLachlan said:

“The people have spoken and the good folk at Seven were listening. Their enthusiasm for the show
has been amazing. And the support we’ve received from the Blake Army has been genuinely
overwhelming. Our ever-loyal audience continues to demonstrate their love for their favourite
Aussie drama by tuning in each week in jaw-dropping numbers. To them, on behalf of the entire
‘Blake team’ I say thank you."

In 2018, the series will pick up in 1963 as Australia sits on the cusp of a brave new world… a

I agree with Craig. The ABC have the number one drama on television. Why would they axe it?

Seven recognises the value of the #1 Australian drama

As in, Seven dumped an Over 55 skewing show, only to acquire another?

They can learn from their mistakes although A Place to Call Home dropped quite far in its second season while The Doctor Blake Mysteries is still huge. They’re not just over 55 skewing.

Point taken. Case in point - me

The show skews very old. Last week’s episode that rated 944,000 in total people didn’t make the top 50 in the 25-54 demographic for the week. It was easily outrated by nearly every program on commercial TV including NCIS, Man with a Plan, Jamie’s, Law and Order SVU; 20 to One repeat on Nine and had a similar rating to the 6.30pm portion of The Sunday Project.

It will be interesting to see what Seven do to try to make Dr Blake more attractive to the whole audience and particularly their target 25-54 age bracket. Of the 885,000 watching last night’s episode only 16% was under 55 years old with the show easily beaten by US dramas Bull and Wisdom of the Crowd on Ten.

Show’s executive producer told The Sunday Age that they felt the ABC were progressively treating the show unfairly, due to them trying to approach a younger appeal.

It’ll also be 3 telemovies.

Tonight’s telemovie was a brilliant ending to the series on the ABC with some shocks and some good surprises. If it had been the last ever made it could have been a nice ending but glad there will be more on Seven.

Agree with all your comments.

Interesting that George Adams (co-creator of the show) said afterwards in his Facebook Q&A, that Seven had shown more respect in the past few months to them, than ABC had in its entire run.
