Surprised considering it was only a couple years ago that it looked like Seven would go full time news / advertorials from 9am to 4pm.
Guess the ROI on advertorials has declined in recent years compared to the cost of talent / production.

It did seem like The Daily Edition was set up for expansion but never eventuated.
I would’ve thought this would’ve been one of the first things they’d cut, before Sunday Night at least.
Hard to believe that this show started out with what, 4 presenters? That would’ve cost them a bomb with Sally, Monique, Tom & Kris.
The show has also had a few different looks over the time it’s been on air (hard to believe it’s been 7 years) and strangely enough it’s last one wasn’t too long ago.
Four months? Bit of a waste really.
My glib tongue says another hour of The Chase. Older UK reruns.
Of all the on-air presenters on 7 in the news department, they’d be on the lower end. Larry and Kylie would be at least double them. And most of the BTS team is shared with TMS and 7 News (which would have thankfully protected many from redundancies). I don’t think that was the problem.
The down-turn in revenue from advertising would have been a primary factor, when that is what this sort of show relies on, meaning an extra hour of live TV was not worth the time or money.
It’s sad news but 7 years is a pretty good run. None of Nine’s attempts in the afternoon lasted nearly as long.
Shame for the job losses.
Can’t say I ever watched the show though.
Hopefully Sally and Ryan are picked up by other networks.
At least they announced that the show is getting axed. Not like Nine with Nine News Now that it was getting “a summer break” and never returned. lol
Don’t think so. That would give Seven a leg-up over Nine in the battle of the afternoon UK shows.
More likely Seven will televise old factually such as Surf Patrol and/or Border Security.
Correct, but Larry and Kylie are winning their time slot and seven is trying to keep that show going buy cutting others
Correct, which in turn helps pay the presenters income.
At the moment, Sevens main priority is to protect it’s 6pm Local News, Sunrise and to a lesser extent the The Morning Show. All other presenters, bulletins and productions are currently at risk of going in order to protect its core news based shows.
I hate to say it, but if Seven keeps on losing revenue we could see the local 4.00pm News gone and The Latest. These decisions are not easy to make in this environment, but for organisation like Seven to survive, they have to be taken.
Sadly, I agree that Melissa Doyle’s days at the network are numbered but I think Ann Sanders has a slightly better chance of retaining her position at Seven if only because of the dramatic “Seven’s longest serving Sydney newsreader SACKED after more than 30 years!” headlines getting rid of her would generate.
If my memory serves me correctly, Nine News Now started around six months or so before The Daily Edition? Wendy Kingston was the original main presenter, then I believe Amelia Adams did it for a while before NNN essentially became the “Sydney weather presenter ego boost” bulletin.
I’m honestly surprised The Latest hasn’t been axed already. People on these forums might really like The Latest, but after The Daily Edition it’s certainly one of the first things I would’ve pulled the pin on if a Seven Network executive looking to cut costs!
Local 4pm news? Yeah it wouldn’t overly surprise me if both Seven and Nine quietly exit that market in favour of re-instating a national afternoon bulletin sometime within the next 6 months citing “a need to redirect resources into our 6pm bulletins around the country” as a reason.
None of us really have an idea just how much it costs to add each incremental hour of news to the schedule. So we are all giving our educated guesses. But I have been told many times Over and read many times over in statements from news bosses and trade magazines that there is just not that much of a cost involved in adding incremental hours of output.
How much that actual $$ is and how much money would be saved is up for debate. Sure, I get that
But Adding more US drama at 10.30pm is not free. Buying ITV or Netflix content is not free.
Surrendering to your competitor and giving up 4pm local comes at a big cost
With news at 5am, bloated editions of sunrise, today, studio 10, today extra, morning show. 1 news at 5, local news at 4 on 7 and 9, abc news 24…
Time and time again we’ve seen adding more ours of output seems to be very appealing to the networks
What seems to be expensive is maintaining individual shows
Could be an opportunity for Nine to snap them up for their morning TV programs. Would add additional talent to allow for re-shuffle of hosts on Weekend Today and Today Extra.
Ryan and Sally on Today Extra then David and Belinda on Weekend Today?
I do like the sound of that. Puts Bec Maddern in a weird position though. Unless she becomes a permanent fixture of the Melbourne news team (which I certainly don’t see as a negative!)
I personally think Bec needs to be in another position. I don’t like her as a host unless Dickie’s energy brings her down.
They both feel unnatural on the program. It’s worse than Today 2019.
Dickie should share entertainment with Brooke. Perhaps if Hitch decides to retire soon, Bec could be a good replacement for Alicia on the weekend news (because honestly, Alicia should be the next weekday host naturally!)
Sunrise reporting Ryan Phelan charged overnight with domestic violence. He won’t be returning to 7 today.
Wow
