7NEWS: Coronation of King Charles III

Special coverage on Channel 7 and 7plus as the British monarchy crowns new King and Queen Consort

Be a part of history unfolding, as the British monarchy crowns its new King and his Queen Consort during a week of extraordinary coverage, culminating in 7NEWS Special: Coronation of King Charles III from 4.00pm this Saturday on Channel 7 and 7plus.

From tomorrow, Sunrise co-host David Koch will be live from 5.30am in London for the week, crossing to Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington at Brekky Central each day. They will be joined by royal expert Victoria Arbiter and the King’s biographer Robert Jobson for all the breaking royal news.

A special edition of Weekend Sunrise, hosted by Monique Wright and Matt Doran from 7.00am this Saturday, continues the coronation countdown before 7NEWS Spotlight presenter Michael Usher and former BBC royal correspondent Angela Rippon take the helm from 4.00pm AEST.

After 6.00pm 7NEWS bulletins on Saturday, coverage of the King’s Procession to Westminster Abbey will begin from 7.00pm until late on Channel 7 and 7plus, while Melbourne viewers will shift to 7two from 7.30pm.

Michael and Angela will broadcast from Buckingham Palace, while Kochie and Victoria will be positioned at Westminster Abbey, where the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, will conduct the official Church of England service.

The live broadcast, in association with the BBC, will cover all ceremonial events throughout the day, providing audiences with a front-row seat to the procession and inside the Abbey, before the newly crowned monarchs are presented to the public for the first time from the famed balcony of Buckingham Palace.

7NEWS UK and European bureau chief Hugh Whitfeld and correspondent Sarah Greenhalgh will team with 7NEWS chief reporter Chris Reason, 7NEWS Adelaide co-host Rosanna Mangiarelli and Sunrise reporter Mylee Hogan to deliver the most comprehensive daily royal updates – capturing all the pomp, pageantry and royal family drama from inside Palace circles and beyond.

From 5.30am Monday 8 May, Sunrise will cross live to the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, before an encore screening in full at 7.30pm nationally on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Seven’s Network Director of News and Public Affairs, Craig McPherson, said: “The coronation of King Charles III will be a spectacle for the ages.

“To capture the magnitude of this historic event, you must be in and around where it’s taking place. We have the best people in the best spots at Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and across London.

“Being there ensures Australians at home will tune in to the very best coverage,” he said.

2nd EDIT
Seven Melbourne is showing the AFL match between GWS and Western Bulldogs. The match will now commence at 7.30pm instead of 7.25pm AEST.

Official AFL broadcast guide says Melbourne are receiving GWS vs Western Bulldogs from Manuka Oval in Canberra and that release all but confirms Seven are going ahead with royal coverage on a m/c and instead banking on the AFL in Melbourne.

Two things about these quotables:

  1. The first paragraph is a clear dig at Nine for basing their coverage out of their Sydney studios rather than on the ground in London.

  2. That second paragraph can potentially come back to bite Craig McPherson if Seven doesn’t win the coronation ratings battle on Saturday night.

Seven advised there were 2 typos in the previous release and that Sunrise will air live in Adelaide at 6:30am and the Coronation Concert is at 7:30pm.

I need some advice… which channel should I watch the coronation on?

Consider factors like set and graphics design, image quality, presenter/talent quality, and general vibes and experience quality.

  • Nine
  • Seven
  • ABC

Interesting change by Seven

Does it mean the ABC, Seven, Nine and 10 will all take the BBC feed for the Coronation ceremony?

Wonder what happened there, maybe ITV was like take all of us or none of us!
I did think ITV was 7’s affiliate?

It’s better that Seven take the BBC, which is way superior in all aspects when it comes to royal coverage.

The ABC’s coverage of the Coronation will also be shown live in full (5pm to 11.30pm AEST) into Asia-Pacific region via ABC Australia.

The Channel 9 promos I’ve seen haven’t mentioned any broadcast times, it’s been very vague to say the least.
