The Block

And its probably a bit of a silly comparison considering Masterchef had next to no competition (Reno Rumble and House Rules) The Block had a heavily promoted Zumbo and Survivor and MKR had big launches as well.

Of course any comparisons are going to be subject to someone saying the comparison is unfair. House Rules received massive promotion across the first half of the year and started they day after the MKR final. The Voice was also up against MasterChef and I would class that as big competition as well.

True that’s my point. It wasn’t having a go at any show that received larger figures than another. Just pointing out that its hard to compare. Totally forgot about The Voice. House Rules did receive a big promotional push but had a very poor year the year before, that was more my point. My point is its hard to compare 3 different shows during 3 very different times of the year. Comparing year on year is probably a more effective way. The Block seems to be up slightly against added competition which is fantastic for it.

The Block still rated ~1.8m for its winner announced last season, although that was a 5 year low.

As TV Cynic pointed out, this years season average is pretty much on par with last year.

With MKR & MasterChef winner announcements both falling below 2m metro (just) this year, I wonder what The Block will get?

Recent weeks have been particularly good, especially on Sundays.

There is heavy competition from The X Factor & Survivor though.

The apartments are due to be auctioned on Saturday, November 12, according to listings on Domain, meaning the finale will air sometime during the week. The agents for each apartment are:
William and Karlie: Biggin & Scott
Dan and Carleen: Hodges
Andy and Ben: Hocking Stuart
Julia and Sasha: Gary Peer & Associates
Chris and Kim: Greg Hocking Holdsworth

Update: according to promo aired today (November 5) during the cricket, the finale will be shown next Sunday, November 13.

I’ve liked the location / building they’ve been doing this season. Nice to have a change.

The contestants aren’t great however - no stand out renovators / designers.

###THE GRAND FINALE

Sunday 13 November at 7.00PM

The most competitive series of The Block ever is set to conclude when the five lavish apartments go under the hammer on Sunday, November 13, at 7.00pm on Channel Nine.

Our 2016 couples have enormous potential to earn millions when the bidding begins. Over the course of 11 series, The Block auctions have made history, with Blockheads earning a whopping $14,640,501 in prizemoney.

It all comes down to the auction finale. As Australia has seen over 10 exhausting weeks, five couples have transformed a grand old 1920s building with no walls, floors or ceilings into the biggest, most luxurious apartments The Block has ever seen.

The Blockheads used their style prowess to design and create five lavish homes – four of them with three-bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, and the fifth with four-bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. All apartments boast generous living areas and an expansive outdoor terrace perfect for entertaining.

Atop this newly renovated art deco giant is a private, million-dollar, New York-inspired rooftop garden featuring a central spine of water, 30 five-metre oak trees, grass lawn and a large entertainment area with two separate seating areas.

Each couple will keep any profit their apartment sells for over its reserve price at auction. The couple whose property sells for the most above reserve will be declared the winners of The Block and pocket an extra $100,000.

In television’s ultimate reality renovation program, the fate of The Block renovators will be put in the hands of the buying public.

Apartment 1: Will & Karlie (QLD)
Apartment 2: Dan & Carleen (WA)
Apartment 3: Andy & Ben (VIC)
Apartment 4: Julia & Sasha (VIC)
Apartment 5: Kim & Chris (NSW)

With the early finish to the cricket test between Australia and South Africa, this week’s episodes of The Block have been brought forward by one night. It means the reveal will be shown tonight at 7.30pm.

Nine copping plenty of flack on social media for screening the room reveals a day earlier than advertised.

Strange move airing it last night instead of tonight. With the early finish to the cricket, I’m surprised Nine didn’t just opt for some filler content and a movie and hold off on resuming regular shows till the following night.

I think they didn’t want to give X F any chance at a lift.

What BS trying to inject Donald Trump as causing buyers to pull out.

Are the reserves based on the finished apartments? Julia and Sasha have the highest, but if that’s just because they did a better job then they get no benefit. If all they’ve done is push up the reserve then doing a better job won’t help them win.

These reserves are ridiculously low. Someone really doesn’t want a recreation of 2011.

The Block Results - coming soon (waiting for WA to finish)

No, the reserves are set before the contestants start work. The variation is based on differences in floor space, level, direction they face, views etc.
The girls got the highest reserve because they are on the top floor with a city view, making it the most desirable apartment in the building.

Haha seriously?

BLOCKBUSTER AUCTIONS DELIVER AMAZING WIN FOR KARLIE AND WILL

The world’s richest reality show THE BLOCK delivers yet another stunning result in 2016.

All five couples walk away winners on THE BLOCK taking home nearly $3 million.

Contestant’s profits tonight totalled $2,935,000 taking the show’s total prizemoney to $17,575,501 across a record 12 seasons on Australian screens.

High school sweethearts Karlie and Will were top of THE BLOCK when they pocketed a whopping $715,000 over reserve, selling for $2,600,000. That was enough to secure them the grand prize of $100,000 taking them to $815,000, enough to cover their upcoming wedding and honeymoon…and then some.

Second place went to Melbourne style queens Julia and Sasha. In a theatrical auction, their apartment sold for just $10,000 less than their downstairs neighbours at $2,590,000. The jubilant duo with their glamorous Hollywood regency inspired home, were still thrilled with the result and netted $660,000 over their reserve price of $1,930,000.

Good news doesn’t stop there. The “golden oldies”, Dan and Carleen in the third auction of the night took home a profit of $525,000 when their apartment sold for $2,490,000.

Newcastle’s husband and wife team Kim and Chris were up next and despite a drawn out auction, achieved a massive success with their apartment reaching $2,305,000 – $425,00 profit to take home to their two young children. (They now plan to buy a caravan).

In the final auction of the night Andy and Ben – the two much-loved school teachers ‘who didn’t have a clue’ from Geelong netted a profit of $510,000 when an underbidder from a previous auction bought their apartment for $2,250,000. (They will now be able to tow Andy’s clapped-out car from the front of the building).

According to today’s Herald Sun, the creators of The Block are in final negotiations to buy the Gatwick Hotel on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, Melbourne, and turn it into luxury apartments. The Gatwick is notorious for crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour. The property is not cheap ($15 million) and the producers will need the apartments to sell at high prices at auction to recoup some of the cost.

Applications are now open for the 2017 season. Closing time is midnight AEDT, Saturday February 4. Apply here

The Sunday Herald Sun reports this year’s season of The Block will not take place at the dilapidated Gatwick Hotel in St Kida, Melbourne after a deal by the production company to buy the property fell through. The production company has apparently found another site in Melbourne’s inner suburbs with production tipped to get underway next month.
