The Block gives away biggest cash prize in television history

Australia’s favourite renovation show, The Block, broke records tonight after selling five incredible family homes in the Grand Finale Auction and giving away more money than ever.

The first record was smashed by winners Jimmy and Tam from Brisbane who took home $1,066,000, the biggest cash prize in Block and Australian TV history. Their 1950s Palm Springs-inspired house sold in the second auction of the night for a massive $4,256,000, which was $966,000 over reserve. It was the largest sum over reserve of all five houses – which means Jimmy and Tam received an additional $100,000 in prizemoney as winners of the series.

Of their prolific win, Jimmy and Tam said: “It’s just unbelievable. The thought of walking away with a hundred thousand dollars blew our minds, but to walk away with a million dollars is life changing. This whole experience was for our daughter Frankie. The whole reason we are here is for her future. This means we can buy a house without a mortgage, that’s the Australian dream. We’re getting goose bumps thinking about that, it’s just amazing.”

As the hammer fell in the final auction another record was broken, with the Blockheads sharing a staggering total of $3,332,002 for the sale of all five houses. The unbelievable result is the highest sum of money ever won on a single episode of television anywhere in the world.

As if breaking financial records wasn’t enough, philanthropist Danny Wallis made history by purchasing three Block properties on auction day.

Western Sydney’s Sarah and George secured Danny’s first purchase of the day when he bought their home for $4,000,002. The sale rewarded Sarah and George with a whopping $650,002.

Melbourne father-daughter duo Harry and Tash sold their 1920s-themed home to Danny for $4,000,000, earning the Melbourne pair $650,000.

However, Daniel and Jade’s home was the one that Danny was most proud to purchase. Understanding the hardships our South Australian farmer couple have endured having a child with severe health problems, Danny purchased their home to donate to My Room Children’s Cancer Charity. By buying their home for $3,800,000, Daniel and Jade take home a life-changing sum of $460,000. It’s an unbelievable amount for the couple who had hoped to make $20,000.

Of his monumental shopping spree, Danny Wallis said: “What an amazing day it was and a real thrill to buy the three houses. I was so impressed with the builds this year, the location in Brighton, and the potential as an investor for the properties in the future.

“The My Room Children’s Cancer Charity do so many wonderful things for sick children and their families, and they will benefit so much from having access to Daniel and Jade’s amazing home.

“It is made extra special for me because I know Daniel and Jade have been through so much with their daughter Isla over the years, in and out of hospital, and they will understand just how important the house will be for My Room and all the incredible work they do for sick children and their families.”

Dynamic Western Australian couple Luke and Jasmin were elated when they sold their 1910s-inspired home for $3,856,000. Earning themselves a cash prize of $506,000, the duo plan to pay off their mortgage and buy a caravan.

The fantastic results came as a great relief to host Scott Cam.

“I’ve done a lot of these auctions and I thought it was going to be a tough day, but it’s been the most unbelievable day we have had by a mile. Everyone made sensational money, some of the contestants paid off their mortgages. It has been amazing.”

Tonight’s auction results confirm The Block as Australia’s richest reality program, taking the total prizemoney across its 16 seasons to a whopping $26,499,503.

Host Scott Cam, along with Shelley Craft and the gang, will be back to challenge a fresh batch of Blockheads when the program returns for its 17th series in 2021 in Hampton.

Whatever happened to the block opener they used to have? I always thought it was quite catchy back in the times they used it but I don’t recall them doing anything this year.

So this guy who bought the 3 properties. If he wasn’t there they wouldn’t have made a profit or probably wouldn’t have even sold cause no competition and he also was on the show a few weeks ago making a donation. If he gives one to a charity to auction off does he get a tax ride off on it? He just rent the other two?

The buyers advocates would have bought if he hadn’t been there; the prices would have been lower though.

They haven’t used the opener for a few years now. I agree though. It was catchy.

I wonder if they would ever consider shifting locations to somewhere like Byron Bay? I think people are little bored with Melbourne.

I think Byron Bay locals will fiercely resist the show moving there.

Why?

A lot of Byron Bay locals are unhappy with a lot of property developments in the town, such as apartments.

The cost of moving production outside of Melbourne was previously reported to be one of the reasons why the show hasn’t been filmed elsewhere.

I also highly doubt that Byron Bay would ever be considered, and agree that locals would not be happy about that at all.

I see.

The only other place I can see The Block happening is Sydney but given that it’s doing so well each year in Melbourne I doubt the location is the biggest problem with the show.

Byron would be a stunning location though.

Yes, but it would be more expensive to film there. Most of the production and crew are firmly based in Melbourne now says. Its also a lot cheaper to film in Melbourne than Sydney at the moment. I believe they also had past issues with local Sydney councils when filming there.

Yeah I do understand the costs and I am not saying they must move. I do think this show is coming towards its expiry though and if they didn’t think about making a move soon then they could be looking at finding a replacement soon

If Nine were to consider different locations for the show in the future, I’d like to see the network venture outside NSW or Victoria.

But in any case, the nauseating product placement (you can’t watch an episode without being bombarded with logos for Mitre 10, Suncorp, McCafe and other sponsors), clickbaity promos and the presenting styles of Scott Cam/Shelley Craft are far bigger issues with the show than where it’s produced!

I went back to check on the block intros they used to have. I really liked their intros. But I stumbled upon the All Stars season on 9now. Wow that is the most sexist intro I have ever seen. I cannot believe it got through. They had Jenna fixing a burst pipe with her boobs, Dani hugging her man because he did an amazing job at laying tiles and then Amity using her hair to paint the house. I am actually now relieved they don’t do the opening intros.

in hindsight everything is offensive.

That house was demolished on Monday this week. Local residents were furious but EP Julian Cress was unapologetic.
