The Amazing Race Australia

Premieres Monday, 29 August

International travel is back baby and this season The Amazing Race Australia is taking full advantage of it. So grab your passport, your backpack and don your runners as we set off on the ultimate race around the world.

Hitting up six separate continents, 20 teams of two (that’s right, 20!) will travel across Australia, Africa, Europe, Asia, South America and North America in a race that will see the winner claim the biggest prize in The Amazing Race Australia history.

Not only will they score $250,000, but they’ll also drive away in not one, but two brand new cars – an Isuzu D-MAX and an Isuzu MU-X. And with double the teams it will only make them hungrier to win the lot!

But no one said this race was going to be easy. Navigating a post-COVID world will have its challenges, but our racers are willing and ready to roll on an adventure of a lifetime, no matter what’s thrown at them.

Taking part in heart-stopping and stomach-churning challenges, teams will push themselves out of their comfort zone and do things they never thought they would do, all with their eyes on the huge record-breaking prize.

Rule master and cheeky host, Beau Ryan, returns for season three, dolling out rewards and punishment, and ultimately keeping teams in check. Who will triumph? Who will fall? And who will win?

TEAMS There are 20 teams. Each team is composed of two individuals who have some type of relationship to each other i.e. best mates, partners`, siblings, etc.

PIT START Pit Start is the place that teams begin an individual leg of The Race.

PIT STOP A Pit Stop is the finish line of an individual leg of The Race. After teams complete all necessary tasks, they will race to the Pit Stop. Beau will let the team know what position they are in. Last-place teams are usually eliminated.

ROUTE MARKERS Route Markers are yellow and red flags that mark the places where teams must go in order to complete tasks or may be used to line a course that the teams must follow.

CLUES Clues are found throughout The Race in sealed envelopes. They give teams the information they need to progress through The Race.

LEG An episode is always referred to as a leg.

LEG MONEY In each leg, teams are allocated a certain amount of leg money that they can use to help them get to the pit stop. If they do not spend all their leg money, they can use the remainder in the next leg. A thrifty team is a wise team!

ACTIVE ROUTE MARKER A challenge both team members must participate in together.

ROADBLOCK A task only one team member can complete. Teams must choose which member will complete the task based on only a brief clue.

DETOUR A choice between two tasks that both team members must perform. Teams are free to choose either task, or swap tasks if they find one option too difficult – but risk their race time to do so.

U-TURN In a U-Turn, a team in the lead can force another team behind them to return and complete both sides of a Detour. This is a massive strategic advantage to the team who U-Turn someone, as U-Turned teams run the risk of arriving last at the Pit Stop and perhaps being eliminated as a result. Teams are not forced to U-Turn another team.

FAST-FORWARD A side task that only one team may complete, although multiple teams may try for it. Successfully completing a Fast-Forward allows that team to skip all remaining challenges and head directly for the Pit Stop - a massive advantage.

INTERSECTION The Intersection requires each team to pair up with one other team (or multiple teams) and perform all tasks and make decisions together until further notice.

EXPRESS PASS Similar to a Fast-Forward, an Express Pass is given to a winning team as a reward at Pit Stop. It allows that team to use their Express Pass on a future leg to skip a challenge of their choice. They can use it only once. They can also give it to another team they wish to support.

SPEED BUMP A penalty for a team who arrived last at the previous Pit Stop but were not eliminated. At the next Pit Start, they may need to complete an extra challenge before receiving their first clue.

VIRTUAL PIT STOP If teams hit the mat and are told to keep racing, it is a Virtual Pit Stop

20 teams were way too many. Hadn’t the producers learned that “less is more”?

The large number of teams suggested not all of them would start the race in Melbourne. Perhaps some of them would leave from Sydney?

Agreed, way too many. It’s confusing enough remembering all 11 teams when they start, let alone trying to remember 20. I hope they don’t introduce teams mid way through the series because that would give them an unfair advantage of being fit and refreshed when existing teams would be very tired. Does anyone know how long the season is? I imagine there will be multiple double eliminations, and perhaps even eliminations mid-leg?

That’s correct, there’s an article on news.com.au which states there will be two groups of racers, half starting in Melbourne and half in Sydney. The teams left after the first leg will meet up in Morocco at the start of the 2nd leg.

Here are photos of racers as provided by 10 and published on Mediaweek website.

That’s an interesting twist. Presumably multiple teams will be eliminated before they leave Australia because it would be hugely expensive to take all 20 teams to Morocco, plus the additional crew etc.

I don’t know if they still do it or not, but in the US version teams eliminated early on are sequestered somewhere for the duration of the race. If teams are eliminated before they leave Australia I wonder if they’ll be sequestered or if they’ll just go back to their normal lives. One of the season in the US they had an elimination right at the very beginning, before they got their first clue. The eliminated team was apparently given the option to be sequestered but decided to go home and took no part in the finale.

Unlikely the Aus version does this. Survivor US does the same where pre-merge voted out contestants are sent somewhere together until filming is finished but Australian Survivor they just go home. Given the longer filming period with more teams on TAR Aus, I can’t see any reason they would’ve kept them anywhere for too long.

Also I’m assuming it will be two launch episodes, one for each of the groups. Probably to try and give teams airtime in the first episode otherwise 20 contestants in one leg would be impossible to track (18 will be too if they join then but not as bad as 20).

$250k doesn’t seem like a lot for the prize money.

For a free trip around the world, and winning 250k.

I wouldn’t say no! :rofl::joy:

It the same as someone who sits in a house and does nothing. The good thing about AR was the prize money and the nail biting finish.

250k + 2 brand 4WDs. The team who wins can just sell the cars for extra money.

Surely better to split it into two series with 10 teams in each rather than have it run for too long with too many contestants.

Agree. It would be much better to do it as fast paced 3-4 week season at different times of the year. The last Australian version just went on way too long. Likely they have 24 episodes to fill again so in doing one season, their way around it is to add more teams to reduce having so many non-elimination legs like they did last time.

Based on synopses from online guides, teams would spend the first few days in Morocco.

Monday
Dust off your passports and pack your bags as we go international. Vibrant Morocco is set to be the first leg of a huge globe-trotting adventure.

Tuesday
From the exotic to the unimaginable, teams navigate their way to Marrakech, where they must devour a local Moroccan specialty and perform a decades-old process to survive this leg.

Wednesday
Teams battle from challenge to challenge, taking part in aspects of everyday Moroccan life from traditional fez dancing, to navigating narrow streets, and even painting the town of Chefchaouen blue.
