It has been an interesting match. There have been two “video reviews”, which I don’t remember seeing in recent times. One was to see see if a ball had double bounced, and another to see if a player had hit the ball prior to the ball going over the net in its entirety.
Is this just a doubles thing, or do the singles have “video reviews” also?
Many people think that Sharapova’s only ever win against Serena was in that 2004 Wimbledon final, where the American was chasing a hat-trick at SW19. In fact, the younger of the two got her again at the WTA Finals the same year.
Also in 2004, Serena won their first career meeting in Miami (also the tournament where Rafa beat Roger in their first career meeting).
I fell asleep during the doubles final last night, did not imagine it’d go until nearly 2am! You start to get a bit of fatigue after sport events like Grand Slams or Olympics, especially that women’s final which was a battle, presentations and post game. I managed to watch the first set and the tiebreak, what a twisty-turny match, the Italians will be disappointed. And that controversial ball over the net video review.
Yesterday the Australian Open broke previous attendance records, even before todays final.
Last year had 1,020,000 total attendees. After yesterday’s womens final the attendance this year reached 1,055,000. So looking likely to surpass 1.1 million attendees after tonight.
I went in last night during the Women’s final (ground pass) and definitely was surprised how packed it was everywhere. I’ve done that previous years and don’t remember the grounds being that busy. Must be the long weekend.
Very good opening set, but then Sinner got the break and ran away. Nervous times for Sascha.
edit 9:44pm
Oh boy, Sinner’s gone 2-0 sets up, after a long, tense 2nd set and chances for Zverev, including an unfortunate bit of luck clipping the net in a rally in the tiebreak essentially losing the point and possibly the set for the German.
Can Alexander fight all the way back and win the next 3 sets? Not even sure this final will make it to 10:30pm.
Jannik Sinner, wow, back-to-back Australian Open champ, even harder and rarer in the men’s
And did not face a break point all evening! You thought Aryna Sabalenka was a destroyer… Jannik Sinner hold me beer. Do we have a new Novak Djokovic? If only I could be reading the Serb’s mind back in Belgrade right now.
Poor Sascha, not without his moments, that 2nd was fantastic and will sting bad. Lovely sportsmanship and speeches during the presentation though, kudos to all.
And the new attendance record, goodness. As for that heckler in the crowd, thought related to one of the wars currently ongoing, but apparently related to Zverev’s legal troubles, c’mon, there is a time and a place, not a grand slam championship presentation ceremony, something so special, hope security/Police have her a stern lashing.

This year felt like the women’s final night was better than the men’s.
Pretty boring match. I find Sinner such a boring player. He’s always so serious and just very robotic. You don’t really see much emotion or personality from him.
I’m feeling bad for Zverev.
That 1.2million number was a tad misleading or inflated, likely including the week prior to the AO. As mentioned above up until yesterday the Aus Open first 14 days had just over 1,055,000 attendees. Still already a record but no way 150k went in today to make it 1.2mill.
The last player to do that? Rafael Nadal (2017 US Open).
Further, Roger Federer did not face a single break point when he defeated Mark Philippoussis to win his first Major title at Wimbledon in 2003 (coincidentally, it was also the very first Major that Nadal contested).
Federer lost to Croatian qualifier Mario Ancic in the first round at Wimbledon in 2002 - Ancic lost to Nadal in the first round the following year. Therefore, Nadal was able to defeat the man who beat Federer before the Swiss Maestro won his first Major title.
Italy’s biggest newspapers already have Sinner as their top headlines: Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica and La Stampa.
The year he lost a final for the ages to Federer, the 2017 Aus Open final, ‘Fedal’ or the “fairytale final” as Woodbridge said in the call of the semi (also his first year as main caller after McAvaney stepped down).
Prominent American/global tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg has revealed more overnight (via his X account) on the Zverev heckler, including images of himself being confronted by AO security and statements from Police and TA…
Sounds rather hush hush and sweeping under the carpet. Not the time nor place, but Sascha’s well documented personal life issues can’t be kept silent and going off social media this morning it’s clear plenty want to talk about it.
On background, Rothenberg has covered his legal matter significantly in recent years.
Tennis Australia would have had a heart attack seeing Ben go after that heckler, they have had enough drama with the home broadcaster let alone any other distraction.
